Progress following THR

Hi, for your THR if your surgeon has used the following hip stem

Furlong Evolution

then how has your recovery been? How long after the op were you able to walk unaided? Pain free? Resumed normal life (work etc)? I am having my LTHR towards the end of this month and the above will be used instead of the longer standard stem. Just wanted to know what to expect. Thanks and best wishes, Harry

    Hi Harry,

check with the manufacturer of you THR components online and the National Joint Registry. Or Call your drs office for further info. Every dr has a preference per patient on components fit and manufacturer. There are many to choose from. My dr had several manufacture companies & styles with components out on display. It was like a puzzle to mix and match the correct components to fit each one precisely. They were heavy. Each one weighs anywhere from 3-5 #'s.

It may help you to see the parts online rather than the X-ray. The X-ray looks very similar to mine. In general they are similar in some ways and very different in application and design in other ways. If cement or cementless , press fit ...etc. There are many manufacturers of components and different styles and sizes.

My first implant in my femor had holes in the prothesis designed for the bone growth to attach and secure the implant.

    Hope this make sence?

    Take care.

    Hope

Here's my wonky joint for comparison .... and a pair of someone else's - one like mine, and a correct one.   Mine was BioMet not Trident.

Graham, thanks. They seem to be longer than the Evolution stem (which is the same size as the one posted by Joanne yesterday). Harry

So much that l dif not know l just found out the other day that the reolacement parts can weigh up to 5lbs and l have had both done. I checked this after standing on the scales to have put over a stone on but l new it was not in fat as l felt not that much heavier and decided to check how much my new joints weighed and found out from 3lbs to 5 lbs by the lenth of mine in my xray l am gonna say l think they are nearer 5lbs each it makes me feel better about putting the weight on. I also read a lot of people that had weighed thereself the day they went into hospital and when they came out they were 8 to 20 lbs heavier. Still that does not excuse l heve put a bit of weight on as l have not been active for almost 6 months. It needs to come off ehen l am back working and moving about more.

I had not thought in terms of the weight of the stems before your post lors. A lot of weight, but if they can improve life to the extent that people say then I suppose they must be worth having inside you. Best wishes, Harry

    Harry/all,

I have edited the original post to remove the vertical text. I don't know why you thought it was originally deleted, there is no sign of another post about this and there is no issue talking about this in the forums.

For info here's a link to the Clinical Trial about this

    https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01721278

I haven't read all of this thread but there seems to be confusion about PMs, images etc. There is an FAQ section linked at the bottom of every page to

    https://patient.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/topics/59133-discussion-forums

which will answer any queries or you can contact me at any time.

    Regards,

      Hi Alan

      Thanks for the info.

I sent the original post then it disappeared. I assumed it was deleted (as it was referring to a specific commercial product). It may have been my system misbehaving again!... apologies ...

Just one clarification please: are PM's also moderated?

      Thanks

      Harry

      Harry,

I had all sorts of problems with that new browser 'Edge' in Windows 10.

I am using Windows 10 with Chrome without any problems.
