Prolapsed Disc - Don't use a masseuse !!!

I suffered a prolapsed disc in Jan 2008 & ended up in rehab hospital for 2-3 weeks unable to walk. A nerve had been trapped by the bulge & took numerous weeks of healing, physio, hydrotherapy, exercise, weight loss & lots of painkillers to resolve. I was fortunate to make a nigh on full recovery & my back now tells me when I am doing too much or being naughty, albeit I am back playing cricket every week & bowling/batting etc. HOWEVER a warning to you...I wish I was aware before. I am presently in agony again waiting to go back to my Dr's this afternoon. I went away for a 2 day break with the wife where there was a health spa/club. I have never had a massage but the wife wanted me to have one as she has them etc. I was supposed to be having a nice relaxing Swedish massage...this was not the case. The whole 30 min process was painful throughout (I know I should have said something but I assumed a professional masseuse would be trustworthy & who was aware of my condition), I have bruising over my back & am reaching the pain levels I had during my recovery in 2008....SO BEWARE !!!!!!

As a Spa Godess   who has been to many over the years, I am surprised that you weren't asked to complete a 'yes' 'no' tickbox questionnaire about your health generally as I thought that this was standard procedure. Any box ticked 'yes' is usually then the subject of discussion. I always tell them about my back issues and extensive nerve damage. I would never recommend a swedish massage because it tends to focus on deep tissue/muscle work and can be quite challenging for even the most able bodied. But spas usually offer a variety of massages and those with back problems can generally be accomodated. The aromatherapy massage is generally very good and you don't come out ponging of flowers or sandalwood etc contrary to popular belief !! In fact all massages have to use oils of some description anyway.

I do hope that your pain gets better soon. I went through a really rotten time pain wise a few years ago, and I know how horrible it is to think that it is all kicking off again. BUT look on the bright side you could have been booked in for a 'brazilian', now that really is painful!!

    Best wishes

Hi daisymoo, do you mind me asking what sort of leg brace you have? I had a very serious disc prolapse three years ago and ended up in all sorts of bother! Major surgery by my lovely consultant but have still ended up with numb leg/foot and foot drop. I did have an ankle brace for a while which worked well but I had to stop wearing it as (for various other reasons!) my leg started to fill.

I am just about to go back to see my chap as apparently the next disc down is starting to mess about - hopefully won't get as bad as the last one! Unfortunately it's affecting the same leg so I think I may need a little more help with that one.

    Thank you in advance!
