Prolonged Gout Pain
Posted , 40 users are following.
Hi all let me give you a brief history...I passed a kidney stone in my late twenties and have suffered approx. 10 gout attacks since then and im now 42. I drink rarely and eat a relatively balanced diet.
In the past my gout has been managed with Diclofenac and lasted only a few days.
However I have suffered an attack/foot pain of varying levels for the past SIX WEEKS!
I have taken a variety of NSAIDs but found Diclofenac were the most effective at the height of the acute attack some three weeks ago however....I am still extremely tender on the edge of my foot and the pain progressively worsens as the day goes on. I have been given Allopurinol but cant commence with them until pain free...but what is this remaining pain? Its clearly not an acute attack but still very painful. Im staying hydrated and cant put my finger on any food triggers, im now at the point of trying to get a referral to a consultatnt as im sick of GP's asking me if ive been on a stag weekend or drink too much!!! If anyone has suffered similar prolonged pain id appreciate any advice!
Thanks

So this was a bit of my background, now the extremely good news for who is a fighter is, I did something for a year that I could even drink beer like never before and Gout was something from the past, guess what, the 5:2 Diet! If you never heard of google it around.
Due to my lifestyle nowadays (basically I have a Mon-Fri job lol ) I cannot manage to do it again but in the future I plan to do it again mainly for my Gout but also for many other health benefits.
Ok so if you do do it please share here so we all know if it was just with me!
Thanks!!
Leo

I'm 31, I've had gout for the past 6 years....I was definitely partying too much and eating poorly mostly protein and hard liquor.
I've used cohicchine and allopurnol in the past. my doctor took me off it because I unfortunately, I have elevated liver levels.
I've had an attack that has lasted a month. I have not drank alcohol since the attack started.
Been drinking cherry juice and nettle tea like it's my job.I have the attack in my whole left foot. walking is very tough, and it's very painful. the whole foot hurts, top and bottom so every step is an ordeal.
Does the pain ever go away with long attacks? I really haven't had any relief. NAID'S don't help at all neither does Tylenol. My specialist has been booked for the last month so I have to wait another week or so to see her.
Does this pain ever go away or subside? I feel like it will never go away...This is by far my worst attack.

So, over the last few years i was suffering from random foot pain...heel, top of foot, ankle, etc. Occasionally this pain would get so bad that I had to crawl around the house, but being in the military I toughed thru it until I could hobble around enough to go into work. I went to a podiatrist, gp, and ortho and all of them would find something to treat which might or might not make me feel a little better but the pains would always come back. Recently, after a severe bought of heel pain that included the big toe, a doctor finally mentioned gout. Uric acid levels corroborated and now on allopurinol and colchicine.
Unfortunately, I have been suffering with medium to low level pain in my heel, toe(s), and ankle for months along with a stiffness in my right knee and a burning in my hip. Luckily, the pain has only made me limp a few days a week but it is constant. Still, I am glad to have a diagnosis that makes sense.
I mostly wanted to post to let people know that gout is not just the severe shortlived toe pain that it is most well known for. While that does happen to me I also live with a swollen feeling and burning in my foot along with a generalized pain that is exacerbated with weight bearing. I am now a non-drinker and eat very little meat.
I am hoping that it will get me feeling well enough to get back to sports and weight lifting. We'll see, but thank you all for the recommendations. I have been chugging lemon juice and water and it seems to be helping along with the medication. Now I have some new things to try.

Even when I am not in the middle of an attack, my foot hurts all the time. When I am not in the middle of an attack, it is twice the size of the other foot, and when I am having an attack it is 4 times the size. My doctors don't even talk about alcohol, and anyway, the worst offender is animal protein.

Hi, I am also having similar issues. My gout attack started 2mont ago. From then till now it's always small or medium pain in foot. I can't put full pressure on my foot. Can't walk naturally. My attack jumps from foot toe to ankle and middle area of foot. All these days I was having attack on left food now it came to right foot. All doctor jsut want their visit and money. No one could explain what's this. What is this happening.
Note: I am vegetarian and health with bit high cholesterol. Never drinkr or smoker. Always hadinimum 3-5 letter of water .
I'm sick of this. My uric acid level is 9.3

My question is and I have yet to hear a legitimate answer but I might have narrowed down a reason. Let's see what you guys think. OK my last several attacks...Maybe a 2 year span of ab 10 attacks I'd say have ALL been on my right side. Whether it be the toe or ankle or heel, all right side! Who can explain this to me bc my doctor sure can't. I think it may have something to do with poor circulation on that side of my body or something or maybe that kidney on the right side could be bad hell idk. Maybe stupid theorys but I really wanna know why. Btw tart cherry juice celery seed extract and water have helped me BT of course I cut out all tea and sodas and sweets. Never drank alcohol or are fish so was covered there already. Those things and 300 mg of allopurinol a day have kept me walking. I am currently coming off of ab a whole month of attack tho in right ankle. Still a tad swollen BT way better since starting all that other stuff. Lemme know what u guys think about being 99% on one side of body tho

Hey jam,
What I have noticed is that my attacks focus on areas that are damaged already. For me it is all right foot as well. I now have arthritis and some other issues and that is where gout hits me. Think back and try and see if there are any events where you think may have injured that right foot. Don't forget about repetitive motions either. Any real wear and tear can set up spots where gout hits.

Hmm OK that makes some kind of sense I guess. Only thing is I've never had any injury on my right foot. I have played alot of basketball for years and years so maybe just regular wear and tear from that who knows. Thank you for your input. When I go to the specialist I will see what kind of answer I get from him lol

Yeah, definitely not a specialist, here. Lol.
Most of my docs really didn't get into the why so much. They just wanted to treat it. It was tbe surgeon (getting right foot operated on this week) who mentioned injury and/or wear and tear.

To answer your question about why only on your right side, what position do you sleep in predominantly? Are you a right side sleeper? I have suffered from gout for years and 99% of my attacks are on my right hand side and I sleep nearly exclusively on my right. The only time a had a left side attack is after a week long recovery - from another right side flair up - lying on the couch on my left side.

You definately need Colchesine, and keep your fingers crossed it doesn't make you as ill as it did me. That said, it definately helped the gout. Once the Colchesine has done it;'s job you can start taking the Allupirinol. I take just 100mg a day and eat and drink what I want.

10 years on.... bit of a lad in my youth and partied a lot, it was the offshore worker culture. Got my first attack offshore, woke and I thought I had just slept funny but luckily went away after a few days. 10 years on and no closer to controlling it and this is worst attack ever, every GP says different things with the drugs and at the minute take Allapurinol and colchicine, in the past colchazine would.knock an attack down in a few days but now I may as well just take a jelly bean... my doctor says keep taking allapurinol even through an attack where as a different dr told me to stop as it can't prevent what is already there, diclofenac worked well in the past. I have now not left the house in a week, crawl around the floor and mostly have to sleep on the couch. Can't play with my 4 yo and it looks like I'm gonna have to cancel my next trip offshore. I tell you.... if I win the lottery the foots coming off...
