Propananolol making me depressed?

Hi I've been suffering from bad panic and anxiety for a number of years. I've got through it by myself the majority of the time time. However recently there was a traumatic event in my family that lead to me being servery anxious. I was proscribed propanlol that really did help take away the anxiety attacks at the time . But Ive now started to notice that i am feeling very depressed since taking them. To the point where I have been feeling I don't want to be here anymore. I never felt this way before taking the propranolol and I find that a few hours after I have taken them i feel silly about the feelings I felt earlier in the day. Has anyone had a similar experience with propranolol? Please help as it's very distressing and has taken over my life .

This happened to me with beta blockers big time. By day six i was a mess and felt done with life. Ot was gerynweird. I went off it. By the thirs day felt way better. Dont listen to anyone who tells you its not from that. I dont get depression amd the only time this hapoens was from trying an assri once and from a beta blocker. Wow was that awful! It is not your imagination at all. Very very real. Also happened to my father in law. I dont know how long you have been on it mine was almost a week so they said throw it out, of yours is a while you have to wean off it. Speak woth your doctor. Dont allow them to tell you its not from that because you know best with this.

lastly clearly go get a cyp450 gene test. I was told by a psychiatrist immediately with this ...slow metabolizers seem to get that response. It is not mental reaction. Its real. And can be prooven. Too bad some drs are so ignorant and lazy, you cant cintrol how your body metabolizes meds. When slow it effects you different and build up rapidly,

thats from my own horrid personal experience,

Thanks for your reply I've been on the for 2 weeks. There to be taken as required. I truly believe that the propranolol is what is causing me to be depressed. It's truely horrific. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and I won't be taking them anymore. Did ssris do a simliar thing to you? I feel like I've gone from Mold anxiety to severe anxiety just through tablets I keep being sent home with !

Yes ssri did the similar results.i only tried one or two. I cant use them. I also now have diagnoses stuff that deletes those meds as an option anyway. Theres other classes of meds too. Goigle the cyp450 gene testing see what comes up. Read and learn about it. Maybe a lab has a phone number and can guide you to a doctor who can run the test for you. Once you have the results in hand no one will question you again. Then they need to update their own practice because this should be mandatory for people who are "sensitive" to medications. It is not as difficult as you think to find someone. Ignore a dr who dismisses it thats their stupidity. No it wont choose you magic pill but it will very surely ite how you metabolize certain ones which is extremly important. Slow is very rough and build uo making horrible symptoms and poisioning. Fast wont work either. . Not in you long enough to work so they give mega doses to some people in their confusion as to why they arent responding. So the tests useful. Theres a lof of different ones as well. Can be your personal answer to all this too. Run from a dr who wont listen. Ignorance is not bliss. But if you get the test believe the results. Two different issues in that.

Good luck. Have your own back always. You need you. Knowledge is power.

By the way its nice to be validated and that they understand why your reacting that way but it suck for slow metabilzers. Its anither hurdle to jump if i was "normal" metabilizer clearly it would be way easier to treat me. So yes nice to have the answers but sucks to treat as a result,

Hi I've been off the propananolol for nearly 2 days now an can honestly say I don't feel depressed anymore. Still anxious but defiantly not feeling the sadness I was when taking them! smile

I hope that was ok to just stop i remember reading it takes a solid two weeks to clear it out of your system. So know that. So basicallt ignore anxiety and right it iff as withdrawls. But agin id feel more vimfortable knowing you have been given the thumbs up to just trash them.  I was back to my own baseline after two weeks. But. I stopped after six days. They are just awful pills for some people. Hope you have the same luck i did and it all clears through and thats that. Drink lots of water.

Hi rebecca. I would defo speak to your gp about how they are making you feel. Everyones different with tablets some can make it worse some can make it better. Its trail and error really. Im on mirtazapine now and they are probs the best ones ive had. Hope you find the right ones for you and you start feeling better soon.

I don't know about making you depressed, however on Propranolol I get some crazy night terrors and nightmares. The doctor is convinced I am making it up, however it is 100% the tablets that influence the dreams. They definitely do more than they will admit and must impact you're mood.

?If they not working, I wouldn't reccomend carrying on as with Propranolol it's a relief type medication, it's not like an SSRI were you need to give it time to level out.

?Propranolol has however so far worked better for me with the anxiety over SSRI's. I just can't seem to get past the first 2/3 weeks adjusting to them!.

?Mirtazapine was a lot kinder for me side effect wise, however I was constantly tired so wasn't a great trade off. It's a lot of trail and error sadly rolleyes

Sometimes, Rebecca the medications can make us feel low, depended on what you take.

Depending on what happened in the home environment you need to address those situations in your own mind and try and discuss your fears and concens with you people who know you and family members.

When it comes to your medications, we are all different and if you have allowed about five weeks for the drug to work, discuss all with your GP and explain your fears.

Regards your negative thoughts and fears. It is important you seek help when you feel low and suicidal. You can talk to your GP also call NHS Information Line They can Triage and help you
