Propranolol and alchohol

Hi,

i have seen seen a few posts about taking propranolol and drinking alcohol and they all seem to suggest to avoid it, however my situation is slightly different.

i am taking a low dose of propranolol (40mg) once a day after the evening meal. My first question is it actually ok to drink alcohol with this dosage? - we are talking a glass of wine or small bottle of beer only, maybe 2 given its Christmas.

If yes, would it be better to take the propranolol in the morning instead then by the time we get to the evening it will be out of my system?

If no, is it okay to miss a day or two given the low dosage?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

If it's being taken for anxiety then I was told by my doctor to take it in the morning as that is when my anxiety is worse. I asked wether it's "a must" that I take it and he said that if I wasn't anxious on ant given day that I don't have to take it. So just on a need basis.

It does stop some if the physical symptoms if anxiety but not the mental.

It's not  like a antidepressants where it builds up in your system I don't think but don't hold me to that. I don't feel any adverse effects if I don't take it.

If however you are taking it for blood pressure then I think it's a must that you take it each day as your doctor suggests.

Im not sure if alcohol will effect you in any way while on it but please be mindful that if you do choose to have a drink, that drinking can lead to heightened anxiety, especially the day after.

If you can nip into your local chemist....they will be able to advise you xx

      Thanks for the replies.

I am taking it for anxiety too. I have missed a couple of days in the past and always felt a bit funny after. I am hoping to be able to come off these at some point in the near future.

I have asked the local pharmacist who said a small amount of alcohol will be fine. Therefore I think it would probably be best to take it the morning instead, mostly because that does make more sense anyway.

No it is not okay to miss a day or two and if you are taking an alcoholic beverage you might find it affects you quicker. Seek the advice of a Pharmascist. Propranalol remains in your system while you are taking it so it would make no difference if you missed it out with regards taking alcohol.

Hi Paul, treat yourself with a glass of wine or a couple of beers and take the propranalol whenever you fancy, it's one day out of 365.

Probably not good advise from me I guess.

I have taken 40mg / day of Propranolol for over 5 years for high blood pressure. When I drink wine on occasion it causes my blood pressure to rise. So I ake another 20mg when I drink alcohol to level the affects of the blood presssure and have had no adverse affects. I know at least in my case If I drink an alcoholic beverage especially wine the effects of the propranolol cancels out and is why I take the higher dosage when drinking.
