Propranolol and migraine

Just to say how well this drug has worked for me, I have been on it for about 6 months now. I spent years resisting taking a preventative migraine drug, maintaining that I only needed to take my Sumatriptan when I had a migraine. But the frequency of the migraines increased, even though I had given up work. Finally I went to the doctor who prescribed propranolol, 1x40mg tablet twice a day. Even though the Dr said it would take time to build up in my system and start working; I noticed an effect from the morning after the first pill. Previously I nearly always woke up feeling stuffy, having to move around gently until the 'potential' headache disappeared, likewise during the day I would have to be careful of things that would trigger a migraine. Now I wake up feeling absolutely fine and am able to get on with life. The only side effect is that I do wake up more during the night, however I seem to need less sleep and have gained at least an hour of useful time each day. I do still get the odd migraine, but they are less severe than before and I recover faster. I also still avoid my triggers like lactose, alcohol and too many late nights.

I have been on Propanolnol ER 80mg once a day for about 5 years for my migraines. Prior to that it was the ER 60mg for about 15 years. ER is the extended release so you only have to take it once a day!

Every once in awhile I will get a migraine and take Imitrex.

Other than that everything is great!

    Good luck!

Hello Gail. I'm hoping you're feeling bettter by now. I can't give you any encouragI'm 41 and male and my migraines came out of nowhere. I work shifts and have terrible problems with my night shifts. I only get around 3 hours of broken sleep if I'm lucky.

i was an avid gym goer, lifting weights etc. I did some press ups and sit ups, went out, felt a bit weird and started to not be able to see the face of a woman I was talking to. My ocular migraines had begun and I seemed to get vertigo straight after. This came on every couple of days.

I was put on 40mg of Propanolol twice a day. It's been a month and a half now. I had one right at the beginning but none until last night and today. I'm hoping this doesn't mean that the Propanolol has stopped working but so far it seems to have had a positive effect. I have high blood pressure as well which the propanol should be helping with!

For me triggers seem to be lack of sleep and very bright lights shining directly into my eye e.g. those stupid super bright led head lights.

    Hi all

I have found this discussion very useful. I have suffered with migraines for around 10 years now. Within the past couple of years I have been able to work out I tend to get a migraine the week before when I’m due my period.

I have been able to manage the migraines with sumatriptan but over the last six months this hasn’t worked. The migraines have lasted around three days and the sumatriptan hasn’t touched the pain. I ended up in A and E one afternoon because the pain was unbearable!

My doctor has recently prescribed propranolol and I have been so reluctant to try it. I have low blood pressure and a demanding job so I have been frightened of the risk of taking the tablets at work. After explaining this to my GP she advised I could take the tablets the week before I’m expecting the migraine.

I wondered if anybody had taken the tablets on the onset of a migraine only?

    Thanks

I'm not sure you can use it like that. It's a beta blocker which means it regulates your heart beat. I wouldn't worry about using it. I haven't had a full on migraine in over a month but it's had no effect at all on my blood pressure.

I have tried on the onset of migraine and it is useless.   I am on other blood pressure medication and 2x10mg has only made a slight difference.   The medication does also make you more relaxed if you are and anxious person.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear your migraine have stopped responding to sumatriotan that must be horrendous.  My migraines are 3/4 days and start about 4 days before my period, then during my period then at the end, then I have one whilst ovulating.  Mine are hell too however I did find that sumatriotan didn't work every time at first,  now I've git a very strict regime that may help you.  The biggest lifesaver for me was taking an antisick with sumatriotan, I'd never done this before but one horrific attack the dr git me to take double an antisick and finaly it shifted.  Now I take an antisick with every migraine, I get prochlerazine tablets from the dr, and it's very rare the migraine stays although I do find it returns the next day so I use anither antisick and Triptan.  I'm also on 80mg of propranolol daily and in September they added 20mg amitriptilyne at night to my medications as randomly on the other side to my migraines I've developed neuralgia which is a sharp headache that never leaves......I'm 40 so wondering if things changing due to peri menopause. Anyway, I hope you try the antisick and it gets the triptans working, I wouldn't take the propranolol just fir the one week I'd take it daily to give it a good fighting chance, it's very tolerable and I gave no problems with it.

Can you get the anti sickness tablets over the counter or does it have to be described?

Hi, yes they are called buccastem, they dissolve on your gum,  they are the same as what you get from the dr on prescription.  my migraines worsened with periods in my 30s so when I started to take an antisick and a Triptan at first sign of migraine it meant I haven't had a full blown migraine in a long time, I still feel a bit sick and Migrainey but the tablets gave ne my life back xxx

I have had a similar experience to everyone else who has reported a miracle regarding head pain.  I want to my doctor and explained I was sick of getting migraines.  I seem to get them in clusters every now and then.   Anyway I am taking 10mg twice per day and it is keeping the migraine devil away.  Every now and then I get some sharp pains in my head but they never develop as they used to.   I was interested in that everyone else seemed to be taking higher doses.   It might also be because I am on some other blood pressure medication as well.

Hi all. Ive been on propanolol for about a week now. Ive never had migranes very often but when i did get them i knew about it. Recently ive been getting them a lot more frequent and being honest they have been scaring the hell out of me. Not good driving around at work and suddenly you cant see or feel the steering wheel. Driving on a night never good either, so went to visit my GP and he put me in 80mg a day. The main question i was wanting to know is it normal to feel slightly drunk the next morning. Im waking up on a morning as though ive had a good skinfull the night before and woke up still drunk. Wears off within minutes. Never had a drink for well over 3 weeks. Started taking tablets on friday morning by Saturday morning my migraine had gone. Come sunday here comes another bad one. Trying to eat my cake and drink my cuppa in costa when i cant see what im doing. Im undecided about them. Might give them another week.

Hi everyone, I’ve been on 40mg 2x daily for over a year now and all I can say it’s its worth sticking the side effects out of you can bare them! I suffered extreme Migraines until I started propanalol and only have had 2 full migraines since then. I had a bit of weight gain, sleepless nights, tiredness and nausea as side effects but they’re completely gone now. I do get quite spacey/dizzy when going into the cold or the heat at first and also get acid reflux now but it’s 100% worth dealing with over migraines. Don’t be scared to give it a try it’s worth it
