Propranolol Hair Loss

Hi,

I have been taking propranol for 7 weeks.

Over the last week I have noticed that I am shedding hair at an alarming rate. I normally have long, thick hair with no loss or thinning.

I have lost so much hair! My scalp is visible, I have a bald spot in my crown area, and my part is very wide. I am going to taper off starting tomorrow. It has helped my anxiety tremendously but I cannot lose my hair!

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, did the shedding stop? Did you stop the medication? Did your hair grow back? I am freaking out, it's a LOT of hair.

I would appreciate any input. Thank you in advance.

I experienced hair thinning recently when I was taking propranolol a lot when I was ill, but I was also on blood thinners and had a vitamin d deficiency so I am not sure what it was that was causing it. I am not taking anything apart from vitamin d and fish oil now and my hair has gone back to normal. If the only thing that has changed in your lifestyle recently is the propranolol ask your doctor if there is another beta blocker you can try I am sure it is reversible. I would also ask for a vitamin d test because a lot of people are deficient without realising, particularly in the winter. Do you mind me asking what you are taking propranolol for?

Thank you for replying! I take it for anxiety and shaky hands. It has helped a great deal but not at the expense of losing my hair.

I will definitely ask for something different. Propranolol is the only change that I have made. I am pretty sure it is the culprit in my case.

I will update in a few weeks. I hope it helps. Also thank you about the vitamin info!
