Propranolol hydrochloride 80mg told to take at night

Hi please can anyone help. I started taking this in the last few days for my anxiety. Last night I was very dizzy and felt like i was going to pass out. I spoke to my Dr this morning and he told me to swap and take the tablet at night instead. Has anyone had to do this? I'm a bit worried about taking it before I go to sleep. They were fine in the day only this episode last night. Thanks

I've has that as well and think prop keeps me awake. I try not to take at all but sometimes if I've been awake all night (I have acute insomnia) I take at 7am / half a tablet- to stop me creaking out completely and it does help. But I feel weird. Good luck keep posting x

I'm starting to experience the same symptoms, though it too about 2 weeks after starting this med. Maybe you are taking too high a dose? I was warned this was a big symptom, as it is a blood pressure med. I think it was all fine and good when my anxiety was at its worse, but as it got into my system, the dizziness started. I stopped taking the med but keep it close by in case the anxiety gets to be too much again. So check on the dossage. Couldn't hurt. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I called the out of hour dr last night who said to stop taking and get the dosage checked as its quite high. My Dr this morning said dosage is fine switch to night time taking. Now I am really worried as even today i still dont feel right and havent taken it

It took about 2 or 3 days for things to level out. I read taking fish oil capsules and vitamin B Super Complex helps - and it did! So, give it a couple of days. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi I used to take it all the time at night and it never really did anything to me. I did feel dizzy on it sometimes but it could just be your anxiety exasperating the dizzy feelings. I took this for 9 months smile I am sure if you perhaps take half a tablet to see how you go on at night and then take another half 2 hours later you can see how you feel about taking it at night x

Thanks I did feel maybe it was my anxiety making me feel worse as this is common with me. I have capsules so cannot split them in half. Did you take the 80 mg for 9 months?

Ah ok, I took 40mg tabs once a day so I could split mine! To be honest they do make you feel worse at first but you do get used to them, it you feel it getting worse though go back to your GP as although you can get advice off of people here everyone is different x

This drug is used to control your heart rate. It slows it down which can and most likely will cause dizziness. For me I always got dizzy but had to stop taking it due to other side effects. When I started taking it I was told it could take a few weeks for your body to get use to it. Your body doesn't know what to do with it and tries to stop it from doing its job. Plus it is slow release so if your body tries to stop it you could get a massive dose. I was taking 80 and was only able to take it for a week. Just pay attention if you get dizzy when you stand up it could just be your body getting use to it. Also drink lots of water with it and I mean lots I was told it could cause your body to hold water and that's what happened to me for five months after taking it I had swelling in my legs and found that drinking a glass of water every hour helped with the dizziness and swelling. My thyroid doctor gave me this and the pharmacy I got it filled at said there isn't much know about this drug.

    Hi Emma

    Hi Emma,

I have been through this situation before. Yes the tablets do have the side effects you have mentioned. I started taking the pill before I sleep and some of the problems did diminished, but not completely.

Also my Dr suggested me to take a Slow release tablet.

Maybe you can try taking small dosages of say 20mg at a time, instead of taking 80mg once.

    Hope it helps... Sam

Hi Emma, I'm on the same meds and I was recommended taking it in the morning, but he also said I could take it at night if I'd rather. I guess if you feel dizzy it would be best to take it in the evening so then you don't experience these sensations. Like if a med made you feel drowsy/sleepy for example it would make sense to take it in the evening.

Thanks Amy. I was worried about taking it at night in case it slowed my heart down to much haha guess this is my anxiety coming out. I did feel so chilled on them though just the dizziness has put me off. I will try tonight and be brave about taking it. Are yours the slow release? Mine are

Don't worry, I had the same anxiety! You're right, it's all about being brave! Yes mine are slow release ones too.

Diziness after intial doses is common- either due to medication or decrease in BP. Drink upto 500ml of water with in 10-15 min of taking pill. More water u drink less symptoms u would have. Also eat something, as in few people it also causes hypoglycemia. Always start with low dose for few days.  When u suddenly take big dose diziness, cramps, increased anxiety is very common however- water, liquid, with eating decrease these symptoms
