Prostate Cancer & Gleason

My hubby 56 years was diagnosed March this year with prostrate cancer which had spread to his bones in back area in between shoulder blades, ribs and hip.  When asked about the cancer not much was said except that it is "nasty".  I asked about Gleason scale and was told that this was not used any more as it was not accurate.  I was trying to get some idea of what we were dealing with, how things might progress etc, but keep coming up against brick walls.

My husband is quite healthy at the moment, after undergoing an orchidectomy.  His PSA at first was 107 and is now 0.068.  Observation is now the order of the day.

At first because of prostate, urology & kidney problems he lost 2 stone in weight but has now put 3 stone on!   The only problem he experiences now is extreme tiredness.

Can anyone tell us where we can go for answers?  We have tried the consultant, urology nursing staff and Mcmillan nurses but everyone seems to be avoiding our questions.

Perhaps I am over-reacting but feel that if someone can give answers then I can judge whether I am over- reacting or not.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Hello, I have read a lot on the prostate cancer UK site. There are lots of people on there with various stages of prostate cancer. I have noticed a lot of them have had chemotherapy. All of them (and us) have Gleason scores so no idea why they are saying not used. I hope you get some answers.

The reason they didn't give you a Gleason score is probably because once the cancer is metastatic it's not very useful. Men can live with prostate mets comfortably for years. If they cause problems then chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be used for pain control. So it really is just a case of crossing bridges when you get to them.

Thank you, really helpful.  If we had been told that earlier we wouldn't have worried so much. Thank you again
