Prostatitis - Bacterial, Stress or Candida/Diet?

Hi everyone

I am new to these forums but have been browsing for the last few months. I have seen a few posts where I could tick off some of my symptoms, and have understood that everyone is different when it comes to Prostatitis and what symptoms they experience.

I am 27 years old, my symptoms began in April 2016 I was lying in bed one night then all of a sudden I felt pain from my left kidney. It must have lasted 2-3 minutes then it disappeared. Shortly after this I felt like I needed to pee. I went to the bathroom then went back to bed. 10 minutes passed and I needed to go again. This happened at least 8 times that night - no other symptoms apart from having to pee.

This continued for several days, I made sure I drank loads to compensate for what was going out. The urge to pee remained both during the day and at night. I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics for possible urinary infection. Tried this and no joy. I was given several other antibiotics to try (trimethoprim, ciropfloxacin) but to no avail. I was then sent on to see a Urologist (inbetween this I had been to several other doc appts and even A+E due to how I was feeling), I sat down gave him my symptoms, he gave me a D.R.E and it was the sorest thing I have ever felt in my life. He diagnosed me with Prostatitis, told me I would have this for the rest of my life, gave me a booklet and a note to take to my doctor for a prescription of antibiotics (6 week course), alpha blocker tamsulosin and anti inflammatory diclofenac.

I finished the course of antibiotics, remained on the other pills - everything had disappeared. I was over the moon! Was none the wiser and forgot completely what he had said about 'having it for life.' Anyway a few weeks pass and more symptoms start popping up. My left testicle became overly sensitive and painful to point of touching it felt like I was punching it. My urine became darker and more smelly. I felt like there was a golf ball lodged in my rectum. I also noticed that my semen seemed to look more green/strangely coloured. Back I went to the doctors, he gave me a dose of more antibiotics for 5 weeks (trimethoprim this time.) Finished the course, symptoms had disappeared and again returned after several weeks.

My symptoms have varied from April until now. Now I don't have an exceptional urge to urinate during the day, only at night when I am lying down - however I am not sure if this is due to me thinking/expecting it or worrying about it. I find it difficult to void fully - or better yet if I have voided fully. Now there are odd times - mostly an hour or so after ejaculation that I have an acidic like burning sensation coming from my Urethra - similar to the feeling of a sore throat - deep down where I imagine the ejaculatory ducts are, possibly even at the bladder neck. The exceptional tenderness in the testicles has gone thankfully. The only issue I am having now is this sore throat feeling in my urethra and the inability to void like a 'normal' person.

My diet is not great, infact probably really bad. I opt for fatty/take out style foods more than the nutrional kind. I smoke close to 20 a day, I drink caffeine (the worst kind, redbull) almost every other day. I work in an office environment so am on my backside for the best part of 9.5hrs a day. So this is what has got me thinking, is it really bacterial or is it due to my lifestyle? I am a bit of a worrier, and can let things get ontop of me quite easily so maybe its stress related? Could it be from my diet as a possible candida growth? I'm thinking the latter is unlikely as antibiotics seemed to get rid of the symptoms - if it was candida I imagine it would only agrivate them.

I have been to see another Urologist last week, I explained to him how big of an impact this is having on me both mentally and physically. I work from home and can count the amount of times I have been out in the last 4 months on one hand. The symptoms seem to impact me more at night, so it gets to the point where I'm survivng on 3-4 hours sleep. He is booking me in for a cystoscopy and said that he will carry out a prostate massage before it for the fluid to be tested.

I refuse to give up and refuse to believe that this is for life. For those of you who suffer from this god awful ailment, do any of you feel that it is more related to personal lifestyle (diet, stress, lack of exercise etc) or do you feel it is bacterial deep within the prostate that is hard to penetrate or find?

Sorry for such a long post, I don't talk to many people about it but feel I can with the likes of you who are also suffering.

    Hi Glasgow,

Prostatitis is a complex subject but just want to say that your doctor did you a grave disservice by inferring that the symptons you describe will be with you for life.

Yes, prostatitis can be reoccuring but their are treatments. Most men will have prostatitis during their lifetime, and a good number may have similar symptons to what you described. I know I did in my 20's. But that doesn't mean that those symptons will persist.

See a good urologist. Get a second consult if necessary. And cut out the RedBull and caffeine at least until your prostate calms down. Less sitting is also a good idea. And you might also try sitz baths for symptomatic relief. Most cases of prostatitis, epecially chronic prostatitis,  are not bacterial so there is only so much antibiotics can do.

When it comes to Penis, Prostate, and Postierer we man are easily frightened, rightrfully so.

That you are so young is also a concern.  I've never had prostitis and i am 64.  Don't really know how common it is; but I've never heard of any of my buds talking about it.

YOur question about diet should be an action.  If you are eating poorly and know it, and wonder if it is contributory, then why not take that step.  If nothing else, it will improve the rest of your body and overall health.

The cystoscopy is intimidating as hell, but really, it is not that bad.  Although I did feel violated; guess I was.  But that procedure is easy and shouldn't cause you concern.  It's what they find that will be cause for concern and you have to know the result to find out what is going on.

Also note that there are thousands of proceeds performed annually with the prostate.  You rarely see in these forums postings with good results.  Mostly you see results gone wrong; because bad news sells better than good.  Just watch your local news or read a newspaper.

    Wish you well.

GlasgowGuy Definitely work on the diet. If you're over weight try to lose some. Its helped me tremedously. I still have symptoms but they've gooten better. Caffine isn't helping matters either. Oh cigarettes, you know what going to said there. You're young quit the bad habits now  before the damage is irreversable. Sorry didn't mean to get on a soap box. The idea of cystoscopy scared the heck out of me. Truthfully, its not that bad and its over in a matter of 3 minutes or so.
