Prostatitis recovery period

Hi All,
So I've been trying to get rid of prostatitis for the last 3 and a half months now, hard to get a diagnosis but eventually got put on 6 weeks of meds (4 weeks levo, 2 weeks doxycycline). After 6 weeks of up and down in regards to progress, a few days after finishing the script the symptoms got better and urine flow improved (no more retention feeling etc.)
Read about only 5% have bacterial blah blah, but my doc seems to think all prostatitis is caused by bacteria at the beginning. Anyway, symptoms improving but I have also stopped drinking, smoking, eating spicy foods, sitting down for longs periods of time and cut down on sex. From your experience If I lapse and do these things will the prostatitis just come back?
thanks

Some advices that helped me: When on Antibiotics, try to ejaculate after 30-45 minutes you took the pill- ejaculating brings blood in the prostate, and therefore helps the antibiotic in the blood to better penetrate the prostate. After 30 min because this is the time when you have the most concentration of antibiotics in the blood.
I dropped off coffe and alcohol. If I drink a vodka tonic I immediately have stronger symptons the day after.
I have been basically cured for 1 year after: 4 months of Bactrim, 1 Month of Cipro, 2 weeks of tinidazole and other minor (wrong!) antibiotics.
Basically had no sympthons left for the last year. Since October 2015 I do have minor sympthoms back. Sometimes burning between navel and penis- discomfort in the area coming and going. Feeling my prostate again, as well as something not right. No urinary problems at all- what I observed is that my gastrointestinal tract may be somehow involved. Did someone of you have the same feeling? I am desperate, because I thought I´ve gone through this terrible thing, and now I am afraid this will all start again, with antibiotics etc. My exams are always negative (went through at least 10 negative cultures of the semen) - but somehow I still think this might be bacterial. I´m reading some of you have been testing the prostatic fluid on a weekly basis. How do you do it? Do you go to the doctor every week and he presses on your prostate till the fluid comes out? That didn´t work with me all the time. He often pressed, but nothing came out..
How does the gym influence prostatitis?
Would you go on another run of Cipro if you were me? Even if no bacteria are found? Last cipro I did was September 2014.
Thank you. Wish everyone could be cured soon.
All the best,
G

Congratulations on your recovery!
My doctor told me that after prostatitis symptoms go away, it's possible to feel minor sympthomps when your immune system is down (flu, cold, etc.) and we shouldn't go panic! is it better for you now?
I have a question for you:
Did you take antibiotics 1 year in the row?
How did the proccess of getting better looked like? Very slow improvoment untit finally all sympthoms were gone? I'd appreciate your answer.
I'm on antibiotics 5 months in a row and slowly slowly getting better (7 different antibiotics already). Doctor told me that it's good to "suprise" bacterias with changes.

I have been following this blog for the past year and have learned so much about prostititus and have received so many tips. I wanted to take the time to post some of my experience and what tips I have leaned to beat prostititus and share it with all of you.
A little background on me. I'm 33 years old from Ontario, Canada and I was diagnosed with non bacterial prostititus a year ago. As you all know this experience is absolutely dreadful and no one understands it unless you have gone through it. People don't understand how painful and uncomfortable it is and the physiological toll it can take on you. One of the worst feelings is you feel all alone, not to mention that I am young and have experienced this. I have been clear from prostititus since July 2015 and recently had a small relapse at the beginning of 2016, but I am happy to say I'm back to normal again.
I wanted to post some tips for all of you in hopes that my experience will help others. Again, I'm not saying that you should follow these tips as they may not work for you. But no harm in giving it a shot.
1) diet. Diet is so important to battling prostititus. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Chicken, fish, rice, salads, potatoes are examples of good foods. Quinoa is very good for your prostate as well. Try to eat fruits that are anti imflamitores, you can google them to see. Try to stay away from diary, or any foods that contain high sodium, spicy foods, chips and or foods that have tons of chemicals, such as frozen foods.
I hate to say this, but give alcohol a break too. Give up coffee as hard as it will be and switch to green tea. I'm telling you, once you start to drink green tea on a regular basis, it is so good for your prostate.
Now the good news, once you have developed a good diet and you notice an improvement, then you can start to introduce things again slowly. The key is balance. If you decide to have a couple drinks one night, it is fine, but don't go out on binge for a week. You can even through in some fast food in there once in a while, so when you get that Big Mac urge, go for it
.
But the key to remember here is balance.
2) sleep. You need to have good sleeps to battle against prostititus. Keep track of your sleep. I have a Fitbit and the sleep log is amazing. As you know, when dealing with prostititus, you wake up several times in a night to go pee. Your sleep goes all over the place and the frustration builds. Once you keep track of your sleep and see the stretches you went without waking up, you will slowly start to build your confidence again and start to get better sleeps. I am no sleeping from 6-8 hours a night with 1-2 wake ups.
3) keep a journal. Record all your daily expeirences. Keep track of how many times you pee in a day, your sleep, wake ups, what you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and describe in detail the pain and uncomfortableness you are going through. When you record things, you have a visual log of what you are going through on a daily basis. Believe it or not, you begin to learn about your prostititus and overtime you will start to see improvements.
I learned so much about my prostititus when I started my journal. I learned what foods to eat and what to stay away from. I learned that I had a connection between having lower back pain and a flare up.
Also, once you have a good log, when you go to the doctors m, you can be specific to them in describing your condition which is very helpful for the doctor. Because it is so hard to diagnose which type of prostititus you have, the journal logs will help the doctor narrow down what you may have and how to treat it.
4) stay active. Yo don't have to go to the gym to pump iron, but try to walk daily, run or play some sports. Staying active is healthy and good to keep fit. I have read that lifting weights is not good for prostititus, but I cannot relate to that. Again a Fitbit is handy because you can keep track of your daily activity.
5) talk about it. This blog is amazing. Reading other people's stories and experiences really helped me. Most important of all, I did not feel alone. I'm open with people about it. I have shared it with family, friends and work colleagues. Me personally, I find talking about it helps and majority of people I know have not heard about it. Again, depending on your personality, it's up to you whether or not you want to share it with people. It is a private matter and it's not something I would bust out and the family thanksgiving dinner.
6) stay positive. You will make progress and then boom, relapse. It's terrible. And your confidence is gone like that. Battle through it and keep track of it. Again you will see your progress over time.
I had relapse January 1, 2016, but I got cocky. From dec 22 to the 31, I was drinking every day, eating pretty much everything, sweets to unhealthy snacks. By Decemeber 31, my prostate said FU and I had a relapse. It took a couple days of to get back on track, but less than a week I was back to normal again.
I had a quick a appointment with my urologist who said that it is common around the holiday season to see people relapse again. I firmly believe that diet plays a major role.
I hope you tips are helpful to all of you. Again, what I'm saying may not work for all, but I wanted to share my tips with all of you and I'm very thankful for all I have learned on this blog from you shadings.
Best of luck to all in fighting prostititus.

Could you please write more about your theraphy? I understand diet, active life and good sleep is super important, but what about medications?
You've wrote that you were diagnosed with the non-bacterial prostatitis. No antibiotics involved?
Please write more about your theraphy to give us more hints. As I understand, it took you about 6 months to recover? This means no sympthoms at all around July 2015?
This is great! Thanks and congratulations

Thanks so much for your reply. Greatly appreciate your comments.
To answer your question about medicine, I only was given about one month of pills of Celebrex. Truthfully, I found this helped a little bit, but the problem with non bacterial prostititus is it's very hard for the doctor to determine what type of medicine to give you. All my urine tests came back negative. That's why the journal was so key to helping me and my doctor determine how to go about treating my prostititus.
As I said, I found a connection between my lower back hurting and my flare ups. I took muscle relaxants, such as robax and Advil worked as well. This did help. To save some money, my doctor prescribed me some prescription Advil so it was covered under insurance.
Another thing I tried was going to the chiropractor to have my back adjusted. I read that it helps with prostititus and I picked a chiropractor who was aware of prostititus and had an understanding of how to go about working on my back. There is a risk by doing this though in my opinion, because when your back gets reset, there is also a chance of flare up again and that happened to me. I think the problem was I went too often and should have given it more time in between.
It's important to drink lots of fluids, especially water. I also recommend drinking pure cranberry juice. All you need is about 2 ounces a day. Pure cranberry is expensive, however the benefits from drinking it are so beneficial, especially for prostititus. The same how for green tea.
Yes it was around July where I finally started to feel better. Still the occasional flare ups here and there, but they were so short. I had flare up again at the end of December, but that lasted for about 5-6 days and I have been clear since, I truly believe it was due to my diet over the holidays, mostly having too much alcohol.
Staying active is so important too. Waking or jogging is very good too. I try to stay active as much as I can, but it's harder in the winter time.
Again, these recommendations worked for me, but doesn't mean they will work for all. That's why recording your findings in journal is so helpful to finding out what works and doesn't.
Have you been diagnosed with non bacterial prostititus? Are you on medication right now?
Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress.
Chris

May I ask what are your symptoms of prostatitis? And how have you been since your last episode of prostatitis. Glad to hear that someone is doing well now after having this ridiculous disease.
Thank you

Hey Dick,
Yea I agree with you that this disease or whatever it is, is rediculous. So frustrating in so many ways. I think what bothers me the most is not being able to pin point on how this happened.
For me, my symptoms at the beginning was constant urination. My bladder never felt empty which made it impossible to sleep. All my test showed no bacteria so I was diagnosed with non bacterial prostititus. Did take cipro which helped a little.
Overtime the constant urineation feeling went away, however I began to have a soar lower back and it felt like there was pressure on the tip of my penis. Very uncomfortable. I started to take some muscle relaxation pills which seemed to help. I noticed that when I had no more lower back pain, I felt better, normal. My urologist said that prostitis can also be related to pelvic pain syndrome.
I try so hard not to get frustrated with flare ups as hard as it is. I try to stay positive and deal with the flare ups when it happens.
I have an appointment with my urologist in August for a checkup so it will be interesting to hear what he says when I explain what has happened over the last 8 months. Haven't seen him since Decemeber.
How about you dick? What are your symptoms and how long has this been going on with you?
I went to a chiropractor to make some adjustments on my back and for massages as well which did help. I did a ton of stretching daily as well combined with a huge diet change.
I had a flare up around Christmas time that lasted a week. I just went an entire 6 months with no symptoms. However, in July I had a flare up that lasted for about 5 days. I do notice that when my lower back hurts, that's when I get an uncomfortable pain at the tip of my penis. So again I take Advil -!: muscle relaxants and stay away from certain foods (carbs) and alcohol which seems to iratate me more.

Hello Walker,
My symptoms before I known that I had prostatitis was frequent urination usually 12-16 during a 24hr period. My urine stream gradually got weaker from the first time that I had my symptoms around 3 months ago. Days before my appointment with the doctor night time urination also became an issue 2-4 timesduring the night. There's also slight pains on my back and occassionally between the anus and testis.
Last monday I had a consultation with my doctor, and performed a rectal exam, and boy it was painful. Since then I had pain in the area between my balls and anus. The doctor said I had prostatitis. He prescribed me 2 weeks of antibiotics, 1 week of NSAID's and 1 month of alpha-blockers to help with my urination.
5 days in, and I noticed a marked improvement in my urinary frequency the past 2 days I only went to pee 9x during a 24hr period. Though I wish it would be around the 4-8 times which is the concensus normal bathroom trips according to most sites.
I still feel as though I'm not fully healed yet and the symptoms might come back once I stopped the medications. I've been away from alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine for a while now.
May I ask how long before you eventually felt normal again? Especially those annoying trips to the restrooms all the time.
Regards,
Dick

Hi Dick,
You and I have had some very similar symptoms it sounds like. I was peeing a ton when I first got this. Overnight was the worst because I just had the constant pressure that I had to go. My flow was good though, just never felt empty. I found sleeping on 45 degree angle helped.
4-8 times to pee the course of the day is good. I still wake up one to two times a night, but I was doing that pretty much all my life, so that is normal for me.
Diet is huge Dick. I also cut out dairy which helped, but caffine, alcohol and spicy foods are major. I also recommend green tea and pure 100% cranberry juice. Just need to have a quarter cup a day, that's it.
It took me around 9 months to feel normal again. Went on good 3 month stretch without any symptoms then Christmas flare up, then went 6 months no issues then for a couple days in July, flare up again. Now back to normal.
Keep a log too of what you eat, sleep and pee times in a day. I also wrote down what I ate ask well and described my symptoms for the day. This really helped my eurologist with the correct diagnoses.
Good luck and keep me posted. We are all in this together and no one understands it unless they have gone through it.

That's actually quitre untrue. It's an old wives' tale, to be honest. Multiple studies show that the main antibiotics used to combat bacterial prostatitis penetrate the prostate very well.
