Protein and Healing

Does anybody know if it would be a good idea to increase my protein intake after THR? There are protein supplements such as whey protein but I'm not sure if this would be the right thinng to try.

They say that protein helps you in the healing process.

Any  suggestions?

i'm a weightlifter and have a protein rich diet.  whereas i think high protein can't hurt, i think you should have a balanced and healthy diet with protein, carbs, and (healthy) fats and plenty of micronutrients (ie vegetables) to maximize healing.

Whey protien was recommended on this forum so I bought some to take short term to boost my diet as it is difficult to eat healthily when you live alone and have to rely on ready meals . I have been very tired as well . Bought banana flavour it is lovely . Don't know if it's doing me any good but worth a try .

I live alone as well and will also be depending on frozen dinners quite a bit. Sadly I don't eat as well as I should because I don't like to cook for myself. I think I will give it a try. Thank you Mary!

I've nothing against these supplements in moderation..but being easy so to prepare should never take the place of a well balanced diet,so should be used as part of healthy diet.

Fruit, veg, salad, cheese, eggs porridge oats etc don't take a lot of effort to prepare.imo.

and should provide all the nutrients we need.

I did this too.it doesn't hurt to increase your protein.the other thing I did is cut the sugar because it can cause inflammation.

Yes, most definately! I started drinking whey protein a few months before surgery and still continue 5 months later. I really like the Body Fortress you can get at Walmart, don't know if you have a Walmart where you live. It's cheaper than the healthfood stores and I found that it gives me the energy to get through the day after surgery. I'm not a body builder but I do like to be toned, the more expensive stuff with higher amounts of amino acids do put on muscle faster but, I just wanted it for the muscle/tissue repair and energy, the more expensive stuff does not give me the energy I need. After comparing ingredients, the one I recommended has "Creatine" in it while the others don't. So I attribute the energy to this. Creatine is also an important amino acid to help fight depression, which to me was important after surgery. I drink it every morning and take a 1400mg fish oil pill which helps with inflammation. Just watch your calorie intake so you don't put on a bunch of uncessary weight.

    Good luck!

I ate fresh pineapple or took Bromelain supplement everyday after my surgery.  I read an article in Prevention Magazine that bromelain helps in the healing after surgery.  Honestly, my healing after second hip replacement surgery went to much faster than the first, I'll swear by it.  Obviously eating healthy, good carbs, healthy fats and lean protein is very important.  It all helps the muscles to heal.
