Prozac no longer available. Started fluoxetine. They say they are identical... not to me :(

Since the price for branded fluoxetine (Prozac) has gone up, most chemists in the UK no longer supply Prozac to its patients. they are prescribed Fluoxetine instead. We are constantly assured that the generic brand is just as effective, if not identical to Prozac.

That is not the case! since transitioning onto Fluoxetine I feel like I've come off my meds all together. The fear is creeping back in and at a time like this with the CCP virus sweeping the planet, it's all I can do to distract myself from the misery all the headlines bring. in the beginning, while still on Prozac, I was eager to know what was going on in the rest of the world, i felt nothing but compassion for those who have lost loved ones and a fierce desire to see the people responsible to come to a sticky end!

Since the change in tablets though, I have felt no enthusiasm, nor the lust for knowledge the internet can provide. Everything makes me cry or fills me with a sickening dread of the future (WAY out of proportion). I've been vile to and alienated my boyfriend, I've shouted at my family and all I want to do is hide myself away and watch Disney films. The world has become a frightening place again, devoid of comfort. I'd forgotten just how much Prozac has improved my life... what am I going to do now?

If you google "what's the difference between fluoxetine and prozac" there is a comprehensive explanation. It maybe that you need a higher dose. I also take a beta blocker about which a lot of people complain of side effects and several comment that they notice a difference between manufacturers. I would speak to your doctor. I understand that NICE direct that the cheapest source of any generic drug be used. I sometimes get the same drug from different manufacturers in the same delivery. You should be able to speak to your doctor even in these difficult times. I rang my surgery and they rang back within the hour, it sounds as if you need support. Good luck.

The generic version of Prozac is fluoxetine - Fluoxetine is common in the UK. Lots of people do find different brands have an effect on their well-being, and I have read that though the active ingredients are the same (the inner part of the tablet), its the inactive ingredients that can differ (the coating) - so maybe some people are more sensitive to this?

You can check the PL (Product Licence) number on the side of the packaging - if its the same as the Prozac number then the meds are exactly the same, if they don't match then there's some slight difference.

Had you fully recovered on Prozac? If still recovering, then blips / setbacks are common when recovering.
