PRP for meniscus tear
Posted , 3 users are following.
I have small radial tear in lateral meniscus.
Pain comes and goes. Drs think Im fit enough to avoid surgery.
Considering PRP to repair it since it's in the white zone.
Anyone have this PRE-surgery?
How long do you rest your knee? Does it require walking boot? Could you work?
Did it help most of all?
Thanks

I had PRP about 11 days ago, which was supposed to be for a torn meniscus. I had stem cell treatments back in Jan, and have been wearing an "unloader brace"
Not to be too optimistic, I think pain has decreased in my knee, although I do walk with a limp right now, hoping it improves

You had PRP twice Jan and 11days ago again?
Was your tear bad?
Did you rest at all after the shot?
My doctor said any shot requires walking boot or guess a brace.
Seems better? Good news!

PRP (platelet rich plasma) is the extraction of your own blood that gets spun. Fluid is extracted while your stem cells remain.
This is then injected back into your body to promote healing.
The idea is that the meniscus lacks a blood supply, except for the outer rim. So, by the injection of blood into the cartiledge it can heal a tear.
It also has no side effects because it comes from your own body.
My concern is that will it work for cartiledge? It seems useful for tendon issues.
And it is pricy $600-1000 a shot. I'm not sure if you need a walking boot for week or two after?
It seems a better alternative to cortisone which breaks down cartiledge and better than surgery which can throw you into arthritis.

I've never heard of this. I had a steroid injection a few years ago, nothing happened (no relief) and another try last Friday. Same, no relief. Dr talking about a scope.

Exactly my point.
Perhaps cortisone may help if done right away to fight initial inflammation. But at what cost?
All that your doing is degrading the good cartiledge you have.
Think repair with stem cells.. I am.
Going to ortho Tomm to ask his opinion.
My tear is about 6 mos old. Though it doesn't always bother me. I'm not cool, with not having optimal use of my knee.
Since it is in the white(avascular) zone I want it to heal.
I'm not sure if it fills in with scar tissue and at what point?
Then would any treatment be useless??
