PSA 18.4 ten days later 20.5

My hubby had his first psa test hes 64 yrs old. Came back 18.4. Sent to a urologist within days and he said to test again. Went to 20.5. Now hes going for biopsy within 7 days. The dr didnt do a rectal exam just blood work again and urine which came back fine. Could this be an infection which is why his number jumped 2 in ten days?

    Manda,

    I would ask for a 4K test or similar and a 3T MRI before having a biopsy, which has multiple attendant health risks. The doctor will tell you they are routine, but just because they do a lot of them doesn't mean it's good for you! But do have this checked out immediately because 18 is a high number.

    1. Was the PSA checked by the same lab? If not, then go back to the lab you trust and stay with that lab for all PSA tests;
    2. Why would anyone repeat a PSA test in 10 days? Usually it is 3 mthly UNLESS there is suspicion about the quality of the lab's testing;
    3. I agree with others that a 3T MRI (even a 1.5T) is to be performed BEFORE a biopsy is done.

    At his first visit with urologist he didnt do any physical exam. He told him the number was high and that labs make mistakes and he wanted him to take the psa test again. The 2nd one was higher at 20.5. The 2nd blood work was done in the lab of the urologist building. Urologist called him back in and said a biopsy was needed. He has to take antibiotics before and after procedure. From reading online i dont understand why a rectal exam wasnt done before a biopsy or ct or mri??

    My husband does not have medical issues. Not on any medication. Ive been with him 19 yrs and thats the first blood work ive known him to do and he went to the dr for chest and back pain and he had ecg and lots of blood work which ecg came back good but blood work showed high psa. He says he does have trouble urinating but chalked it up to aging. Hes never had an issue sexually either.
