PsA and face pain

Hi All, I was diagnosed with PsA 9 months ago. I have been getting a pain in my left eye that spreads down the cheek and past the ear. It's an awful pain that doesn't respond to over the counter meds. The specialist seems to think it's related to PsA, does anyone else have this pain? I've been checked for sinus and the GP doesn't think it's TMJ.

Uveitis and other eye conditions are part and parcel of PsA, I'm afraid. Dry eye, belpharitis etc

If it is uveitis it needs treating and the specialist should not ignore it. Ask GP to refer to an opthamologist pdq to get check over?  Or perhaps a maxfax appointment not sure I can spell that in full - maxilofacial clinic?

Commiserations on joining the PsA club! Coming here is a good idea though..its good to talk to others with the condition - not so alone and will give you some alternative perspectives

I have hopefully (had) inflammation in the TMJs - gave me swelling of the the side of the jaw below my ear, earache, neck pain and a displaced jaw so I was grinding my teeth. So does not sound like that though...

Any other symptoms? And how old are you? The rheumy I saw was determined the symptoms I had were from PsA. They weren't, it was polymyalgia rheumatica, and that can be one of the first signs of a related vasculitis called giant cell arteritis which causes head pain and can affect vision if untreated. It isn't common in under 50s (though it does happen) so if you are in your 20s it is unlikely. But you never know.

Then whoever decided to rule it out doesn't know what they are talking about I'm afraid. PMR and GCA both have "over 50" as the age guide - and there are documented cases of proven GCA in people in their 30s and 40s. There are several on the 3 UK PMR/GCA forums who were in their late 40s when it wasn't initially recognised but subsequent doctors have confirmed they did have GCA.  I was 51 when my PMR started at a level I noticed, i'm pretty sure it had been there before. And up to 20% of patients with either of them have normal range ESR and CRP - and that appears all over the medical literature.

You need a better informed doctor it seems - where are you?

I'm in Australia. I have been told by 2 specialists that I don't have PMR even though I looked online and saw you can get it in your 50's. I don't trust any doctors at the moment but my pain has been so bad today I have to see the GP tomorrow. Felt so sick with the pain.

See your optician. There's a small but serious risk that it is iritis. This is a linked condition.

Annette Ive had psoriatic arthritis for 4yrs and mine is my right eye...its so bad that u have to hold your eye right?? I was told by my Rheumatoid doctor that it has nothing to do with that so he tested my vitamin d levels and I was a 2 which is EXTREMELY BAD...everyone should be between 80 and 100 for optimal health...most all doctors DO NOT TEST FOR THIS NOR DO THE HOSPITALS I am living proof of that so I was put on 50,000ui a week of vitamin d3 decara and im on my 17 week and my eye pain is a heck of alot better....sweetheart please request this to your doctor...EVERYONE SHOULD...being out in the sun is almost obsolete these days and sunshine is natural vitamin d just make sure u expose 60% of your body with no sunscreen except for your face at least 3 times per week for 15 to 20 mins each time...if your vitamin d is fine which MOST PEOPLE IT ISNT then u might have damaged a joint in your next from your psoriatic arthritis but in my opinion and my doctors as well it SHOULDN'T AFFECT YOUR EYE baby girl I hope this helps u
