There are many things that can give you a raised PSA. Normal is often thought of between 0 and 5.0 (most doctors would consider 5 too high for someone only 56 yrs old) but it's possible to have prostate cancer caused by the most common form of prostate cancer (acinar adenocarcinoma) with PSA levels as low as 2.5... the key is whether you have a rising level or whether it is stable. You should also be aware that some types of cancer (small cell tumours) return normal and initially unchanging PSA levels.

Bear in mind that anything that affects the prostate affects the PSA level (eg a digital rectal examination or even recent sexual intercourse).

Frequent visit to toilet coused by enlarged prostate which narrowed  the urine passage.

and it may be you might have higher reading of PSA stay calm and mointor the livel of if stable is good if it goes up have rectal examination or biopsy .

surveillance ,last 2 years PSA level stabilised at 6 ,few months ago i took another

I had the rectal examination told it's enlarged that's why they did the test.

    Hello John

Until you get your PSA score, you cannot plan how you will tackle whatever is found, the doctor will inform you of how to proceed if it is as your thinking PC,

first if the PSA is high he may advise a biopsy.

People suffer from other things that seem like PC, so you need to be sure.

i myself had a PSA of 893. Unfortunately I am high on the scores all round, but I changed a lot of things and went through a trial called stampede, I have plenty of aches and pains but I now have a PSA of 0.07 I intend to fight all the way.

what I am trying to say is no matter what your told, good or bad, if bad, you will be treated by people who are experienced and have your health and welfare at heart so whatever your told keep positive.

I too have acid reflux problems in addition to prostate cancer detected after a series of escalating PSA scores.

    Prostate issue

Please understand that one PSA test doesn't amount to much.

A urologist may prescribe antibiotics to rule out infection.

Soon after, maybe 3 weeks after you stop the antibiotics, you may redo the PSA test. If the result is higher than in the earlier test you don't have an infection.

Your oncologist may suggest another PSA test in 3 months or a 3T MRI or a biopsy.

I was offered such a choice and noted for a 3T MRI performed at an imaging facility where the images are reported on by radiologists specialising in prostate problems.

The psa result itself means nothing. A person can have a PSA of 0.1 and have cancer while another can have a PSA of 97 and not have cancer.

The change in the PSA over time is the tell tale sign. A rule of thumb is to see how long it takes to double. If it doubles in a year, then that is a problem.

    Acid

I suggest you see a ENT specialist. You should also limit the amount of the coffee, tea, chocolate, citrus fruits, yogurt, tomatoes and spicy foods, amongst others as these all contribute to reflux.

      You're right.

      Many doctors don't care.

      Many have no idea.

While the acid reflux is unlikely to be related to prostate cancer or any prostate issue, you need to search for a major teaching hospital or as some call it " a tertiary referral hospital" and Google the ENT doctors.

Once you find one you reckon his CV looks good and ideally has many patients, you need for him or her to put a scope down your throat for a good look. This is done after an anaesthetic is sprayed either in your nose or mouth. The whole exercise is painless. What is crucial is whether the doctor sees a growth or similar in the larynx. If so, as in my case, it needs to be treated and not ignored.

One person's acid reflux is not the same as another's. And hence treatments are very different.

Hiatus hernia and weak muscle i was told i have, my acid only effects my throat and makes me almost panic. they said it's silent acid reflux. but i have loads of other problems these are just a few.

We can't pick and choose who we see at hospital
