PSA test just taken

Posted , 7 users are following.

About a month ago I had my first PSA test with a score of 4.12. Had been having what I consider minor urinary problems. A month later, another test and now score is 5.2. Just in the last week or two now I am noticing pain in groin area and inner thighs, very troubling. Getting biopsy in two weeks but wonder if anyone has any idea what this might be about.

danno1202...unfortunately (I hope I'm wrong) it sounds like your headed into the dim dark world of Prostate Cancer... It's difficult to tell at such an early stage without the normal markers...  The biopsy will reveal all...

    Hi Danno,

You didn't give your age and you have very little information with only two data points.  You could be experiencing a localized infection that could simply be treated with antibiotics.  For your information, the PSA test should not be used for screening purposes because it is notoriously inaccurate and changes due to many factors, only one of which is cancer.  It can jump far more than what yours did simply from engaging in intercourse or masturbation within a few days prior to the test.  Depending on your age there is an increasing likelihood that you have a non-threatening cancer and a far less likelihood that you have anything that could threaten your well being during the remaining course of your life.  Read, read, and read some more and do not allow anxiety to compel you to take any action.  I would heartily suggest you read in its entirety the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation on Prostate Cancer.  That document will give you some perspective on the costs and benefits of screening and treatment.  You will inevitably find yourself on the horns of a cost-benefit analysis at every turn. Treatment almost invariably causes significant and life altering side-effects (the costs).  Treatment promises, but rarely delivers, long-term cures (a promised benefit but rare outcome).  I wish you the best,  Carl

Thank you so much, carl05115, for replying to my post. More information is always helpful. For the record, I am 59 years old. I was just tested for a urinary tract infection and it was negative. In a nutshell, my story goes like this: For years I've had some trouble with frequency and flow and just attributed it to a slightly enlarged prostate. (One doctor said it was, one said it was normal) For several months now, I have been experiencing some mild to moderate burning after urinating. My father-in-law, who has been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, suggested that I get the PSA test taken. Somewhere between the first PSA, five weeks ago, and the last one a week ago, I began to experience the groin area and inner thigh pains. With the second PSA being 5.24, the Urologist has called for a biopsy. So between that and the recently developed pains, I'm more than a little concerned. The biopsy is set for the 18th, so that should tell a lot. I will look for the publication you mentioned as well. Thank you.

Hi cannot,I'm not a man,nor am I a doctor, but my hubby has just started this long road.  Like you he experienced having slight problems urinateing ,

The end of April he had a psa 10.5, he was sent for a biopsy of which they took 12, and he was told he had localised cancer.  Now I don't want to go into it all,but I tend to agree with both of the above men. The psa results are unreliable the biopsy will tell you more, but make sure you listen to the risks of having a biopsy or not having one, only you can make that decision.

But the thing I agree with Carl on is read and read some more, any unanswered questions you have find out.  I've done all this for my hubby because I've had some dreadful decisions made by doctors on my health.

Do your homework. Good luck to you I hope all goes well.

Hi danno1202 is your PSA 4 or 12 or 5 or 2 if it is 4 or less that is near normal if it is 12 my friend you could have problem hopefully not, I have just had the operation last Tuesday infact my PSA was 13 first biopsies came back a Cleason 3x3 go on watch list least agressive not life threatening, However second PSA came back 14 consultant could not understand why it had gone up with such a tiny focus Q more biopsies this time Gleason score 3x4 intermediate slightly more aggressive still not life threatening, However it was make your mind up time. Do not read to much into as yet wait for the results of the biopsies and the Gleason score hopefully they will come back negative stay positive and for gods sake be carefull what your read i found it negative and nothing definative it could do you more harm than good. If you want my take on the op i will walk you through it, Best Regards
