Psychosomatic?? Giving blood and nearly passing out.

I used to donate blood on a regular basis; watched them put the needle in my arm, watched the blood drain into the bag, pain didn't "bother" me. Then, I give one time do the same routine and nearly pass out. Ever since then i cant even get blood drawn without nausea, hyperventilating and feeling like i might black out. I have little tricks to get me through it but I just don't understand where this came from. I am not afraid of needles or blood, i can still look at them and feel nothing, but the act of the needle sticking me is usually what triggers this. I can handle the pain, because normally they have to dig for a vein so I'm used to that, but why did this happen after years of donation? Is it my mind trying to protect my body? Do i just have a lower pain tolerance as i get older?

Yes, its your mind subconsciously connecting the situation, any pain, and your passing out. It goes into life saving mode to try and protect you. Well done you for giving blood. You are a life saver yourself.
