PTSD from a Minor Car Accident

Almost 10 years ago I was in a minor car crash with my sister. No one was hurt but when it happened I was not looking at the road (I was laying down in the backseat reading a book). Ever since then I haven't been able to sit in a car while someone else is driving (I am fine driving myself - I think because I am in control) without being completely focused on the road the entire car ride otherwise u get a lot of anxiety. Also any time someone steps on the gas or the brake too hard it triggers the anxiety still. I've always called it "car trauma" but I wonder if it can actually be classified as PTSD.

There is a great deal more to PTSD than just anxiety and avoidance. I doubt a minor car accident is enough for criteria A but you do need to see somebody to deal with your anxiety regardless.

I have been driving now for over fifty years and have had my share of accidents, in fact My Parents had an accident with me in the back when I was still very young.

Like you I do not like been driven by someone else and sometimes I have problems that bring about me pressing or moving my feet when the driver seems to miss, what in my eyes the time when He was supposed to press the breaks or clutch. It does not show as me turning the imaginary wheel however I still become nervy watching what is happening in the front of the car.

If your concern is PTSD you need to discuss that with your GP. However depending on the time mentioned above may be too long in the past. If this is the case all I can suggest isĀ  you try and arrange you sit in the front of the car. If you feel this is not possible or inadvisable you need to try Breathing Techniques or Mindfulness Relaxation Technique this can be adapted when feeling jumpy. You will find explanations on this site, also Mindfulness on the Internet, that may help
