Pyelonephritis

I have just had my second bout of pyelonephritis in two months, the second one being far more severe than the first one. I don't get any lead up clues to the infection and the first signs I get are numerous rigors (severe shaking and shivering) and then pain in the kidney area and sickness. It appears to come on so quickly and I have just spent three days in hospital on intravenous antibiotics to help clear the infection with more oral antibiotics to take at home. I do have to send off another urine sample when I have finished the course of treatment but my main concern is that I don't get any earlier warnings to get help before it gets so acute.

I have had the same issues. The first clue I have is when I start to shake uncontrollably closely followed bt back pain and sickness. I ended up on intravenous anti biotics the first time but got away with just tablets the last time. It's quite scary when it happens and would be interested to know if there is any early warning signs to look out for and if it can be prevented full stop. Hope you keep well now x Sally x

    Hello

i wonder if you or anyone else has had any progress with tests or explanations for the repeats?

My my daughter has suffers with the same sudden onset, third time in 10 weeks. I feel helpless to help her. She's had scans of her bladder and kidneys and nothing found to be a cause.

She's only nine and missing week off school each time with hospital admission. Such a worry I am normally relaxed parent but feel a nervous wreck!

Any advice ice from those also in the system greatly appreactiated.

The hospital should take a blood and urine sample that they then grow any bacteria on them. There are a lot of different bugs that can upset and attack the kidneys.

They should also do a CT scan ( some time with dye ) check the function of the organs too. If these have been done and there clear then it she should at least be reviewed by a urologist to see if they can shine light on the issue
