Query again about MXT

My sister has taken 1 tablet for two weeks running, and suffered vomitting all night, pain headache, and dizziness.  She has been told to miss next weeks dose....then maybe take only half the dose the next week.  It was suggested to her about injections...can anyone advise the pros and cons of an injection, as opposed to the tablets??  Thanks for any knowledge please!

The tablets maybe upsetting her stomach. I inject weekly and apart from feeling a little nauseous for a day or two after I feel fine. The injection takes the drug directly to where it needs to be so maybe she would better with that. I hope things work out for her.

Hi Linda, Yes I agree with Chris.  The injections bypass the stomach and so sickness should stop.   All the best.

Hi, my exp and research shows that although the injection of methotrexate may be more effective due to the way it metabolizes, the side effects are exactly the same. It appears this medication is toxic to your sister, in the way it was me. I shared with my doctor that it felt as though I had ingested something poisonous.

My sister only now feels well today after being very ill for a day and a half, she says ythe same as you, that she felt as if she was being poisoned.  She takes 15mg  once a week, would half the dose be easier and effective, was it too strong we are wondering?. She has tried hydoxychlorine, no effect after 6 months, have you tried Sulphazalazine?, she hasn`t nt as yet...any advice welcome..thank you.

The research I found that states the side effects are the same whether given orally or by injection, was shared by Rheumatologists as well as patients experiences. I personally had this experience as well.

Does she also take Folic Acid ? and how many days each week does she take it.

It is most important to take the Folic Acid as this stops a lot of the side effects from the MTX.

    Hi Linda,

I started taking 10mg Methotrexate in Dec 2014 and also 5mg of folic acid once a week. I have to admit for the first couple of weeks I was very poorly and constantly being sick. I went to see my GP and she put me on 30mg of Omeprazole daily which helped a little I was still being sick so my GP upped the does to 40mg daily and since then I have been fine. Might be so it might be worth your sister going to see her GP.
