I too have a small hiatus hernia
i am not sure if it gets bigger as such. Your doctor would definitely answer that. Some people have big hernias that seem to not cause symptoms. I havd hadf reflux for years and that is worse. I havecto restrict myself to get any relief;no alcohol,no caffeine,no big meals, elevate the head if bed 8 inches. Can be depressing. I drank coffee for years and strong tea most of my adult life so I miss it.
You may stay symptom free. Good luck.
Obviously age is a factor. I am 50+
the younger you are the best chance there is of coping and preventing flare ups
i would have a chat with a gp you can talj to. Internet is ok but it is always best to talk to a professional

I agree . It depends on your symptoms. It is a warning sign and your body can probably do with some changes to keep it small. Hiatus hernias can be caused by too much weight , if that is a problem then alter your diet slowly to help yourself. Do you have acid reflux? I have a very large paraesophageal hiatus hernia with loads of symptoms. I have been told that I need an operation and got a call to have the operation but it got cancelled because someone else needed the surgeon more than me. The operation is no walk in the park so anything you can do to stay away from it is preferable. Talking to your GP is honestly the best thing you can do for yourself.

what a neat name. I think the size of the hernia may not be the issue, the symptoms are the issue. So what are your symptoms and have you been given any medication to control them ? My hernia is large and wasn't symptomatic until the last few years. If you have a sliding hernia then you probably have heartburn. Mine is beside my esophagus and sometimes I feel like I'm nine months pregnant . I just can't seem to stop belching. My ribs hurt often from the pressure and I have lots of trouble with digestion.
Thanks to all who wished me well on my surgery tomorrow. I'm trying to make the hands on the clock move faster. One more meal until I am on a liquid diet .
