Just diagnosed by DNA and blood test says i have medium high ferritin.

Is FOLATE OK to take in form of green leafy vegetables and vegetable juoces? I read FOLATE is water soluable and not stored in body, which means not stored in liver. I'm talking about folate, NOT folic acid. What are your thoughts?

    Hi Dawn,

I pretty much have a vegetarian diet now. It's meat where you get most of your food iron from particularly steak, liver etc. We don't get it from veg because it's more roughage so not digested as easily.

Also I was told when I'm eating meat (meals out or a special occasion), avoid orange juice because vitamin C increases iron absorption. Kiwi fruit I think are another culprit.

Tell me more about Kiwi. Does it have a lot of Vitamin C? I have some sort of body reaction when I eat fresh Kiwi (and Pineapple). I thought I was allergic to it. Will Google.

    Hi dawn

If you have hemochromatosis, with elevated iron levels,

Just glanced at Google re folates these appear to be iron rich foods.

As such should be avoided, you say you have read ,folates are water based

And not stored in the body, with hemochromatosis sufferers we store

Any iron we have in our bodies, appears to attach itself to our organs

Hence our levels get high and we need venesection to bring these levels

Down,so please speak to your doctor for clarification on anything you

    Are unsure about???!!

Please take anything I say as something I have read and I am not 100%

    Sure.

Talk to your doctor's(or telephone the hemochromatosis society they

    Will advise you better)

    Cheers philx

Many iron rich foods, eg spinach are totally fine. There is a substance in spinach that prevents any absorption of iron...strange, but true. Don't be afraid to eat foods with vitamin C, don't go over board obviously..I eat raw chillies with most of my meals and they are the highest vitamin C source going! It's taking any supplements with vitamin C which must be avoided, or any foods with added iron, eg cornflakes. Our condition is treated by venesection only.....just eat a normal balanced diet, but don't go mad on iron rich food mainly red meat, heart, kidney etc.....drink or take calcium with meals...but have normal meals.

Some folk get overly obsessed with diet..it's not necessary.

I enjoy some beer and wine at weekends...levels remaining low, as it's the venesections looking after me.....

      Cheers..

Diet wise decrease red meat dont take vitamin c do not eat raw shell fish it can be toxic to someone with hemochromotosis you can eat ur leafy veggies but if like me you suffer from ibs they pretty much go straight through you . I joined the hemochromotis society also i bought a diet book for people suffering from it. You can google but get a lot of contraditory info .

Have to remember veggies contain iron so dont over do . Its better toinduce mild anemia until your storage of iron is reduced.

Hiya...Folate is always vital for the production of new blood cells. It's therefore great to take especially during treatment phase with regular phlebotomy treatment.

Some folk panic a little too much about diet and Haemochromatosis...yes try to cut down on red meat, drink milk and tea, calcium products, no vitamin c supplements....that's about it really...it's the keeping up with regular blood donating/phlebotomies that is vital. One blood donation gets rid of 3-6 months worth of iron absorbed by diet.....

    Dilate though...Def worth taking...

    Cheers,

    Mike.
