Questions to ask at 6 week check

Hi all, hope you are all doing well,

I am 6 weeks post op today Right THR and have my appointment with the Consultant on Friday evening.

I obviously have lots of questions for him, which I think I will write down, but it would be helpful if anyone could suggest any questions in case I have forgotten anything please.

The obvious ones are can I relax the 90 degree rule, can I remove the raised toilet seat, can I drive.

I am also a bit concerned about going back to looking after my 22 month old grandaughter (its only 1 day a week) as at that age they are so fast and keep falling etc, so may need to bend to pick her up (can I even pick her up without doing damage to my hip ???)

Anyway, I would be grateful for anything I may have missed.

Thanks to you all.

Love

I've got two weeks to go to mine but I'm going to ask about the state the hip was in and how many muscles/tendons had to be cut as there is still swelling around the wound and my quadriceps are really sore and muscles in the back abopve the hip. I will probably ask about possible physio for this. After the op I only saw the surgeon briefly who said it had gone well.

One thing I don't know is when you can start to walk up stairs normally ie alternate feet. I know I can't do this yet.

      Thanks Anne,

I live in a bungalow and hadnt tackled stairs until last Saturday when I did go up and down about 15 stairs normally.  It felt fine, although I did overdo things altogether on Saturday so did suffer on Sunday.

Hi. I had my THR 7 weeks ago today.  I saw registrar at hospital last Thursday and found him to no help whatsoever.  I too went with my questions about what I can do now and all I got in reply was about the 90 degree rule.  Hence why I joined this forum.  I started driving again last Friday and all okay but can only do short distances.  I have stairs and at about week 4 was going up and down normally.

Probably best advice is to listen to what your body tells you.  If sore or discomfort then stop. It seems that different hospital and Doctors do things differently to another.

I no longer need crutches, toilet seat or frame, but discovered that difficult without these at work - no handrails or something to use for support.  Great to ge pain free and getting back to some semse of normality.

The forum has been so useful to find out how others are getting on and useful advice.

hope your consultant is more helpful.  As for the bending down, as others also do, put operated leg out behind you. It may help.

Hi Nadine! Well done you! I would take a list of things you need to ask your consultant! I am 11 weeks post op and still not there yet,but am focusing on hydrotherapy or a spa and reflexology as well! As I am under stress! Am a full time carer for my hubby! So not easy going! Anyway hope all goes well regards Amanda

Hi Nadine, really pleased for you, I'm 7 weeks tomorrow & nowhere near where you are.  My muscles are still knotted up, & I still have to be very careful with the bending & lifting.

I wish you luck with your new hip!

    Take Care. Julie.

Hi Nadine ...My follow up visit was May 13, 2015 and lke you, I had written down the same questions .... mostly about the groin pain in my non-operated leg -  he was not really that intrested to answer them  and sort of said that all restrictions are lifted - be careful for another 6 weeks with the 90* -  It is so routine for them - he had great bedside manners though :-) - I had xrays taken right before my appointment - well, apparently the cartilage in the other hip deriorated so much in 6 months that I will need surgery there as well .... so I would maybe ask questions about pain or swelling or anything you are worried about - as said here so many times : listen to your body ... good luck Friday !!!
