Questions to ask when go for follow up appt
Posted , 8 users are following.
Reached 6week milestone today following my LTHR.
Im 54, female had a full ceramic uncemented posterior replacement (as far as I know...surgeon wasnt overly descriptive!)
I am due first appt with surgeon on june 7th and wondered if you hippy experts have any tips for me when I go? Especially any questions I should ask him.
I am still following precautions as OT said to for 12wks.
On just paracetamol as needed. In house on one crutch or end up with a kind of waddle.
2 outdoors seem not to limp or waddle.
My backaches due to sleep restrictions and cos of sitting upright (i have severe disc degeneration).
Not sure if should ask for any physio followup, got a sheet from hospital on discharge with exercises but this surgeon only refers to PT if necessary after followup.
Still feel knackered if standing for any length of time and was very anaemic postop (hb 88) so not sure if should get repeated by gp. Plus i did have abx for wound infection (now ok).
My sicknote runs out at weekend but cannot say i could cope at work yet (im an anticoagulant specialist nurse), plus not yet clear to drive till the follow up.
Am i wittering??? Lol 😁
Sometimes feel like this forum is my lifeline to answers as unless you had this op youve no idea how you feel.
My hubby is great but hes not a believer of illness...its all in your mind!! No its not some one chopped off my femur arrgh!! 😠😠 this makes it hard for me as he thinks if youre not positive you wont heal when sometimes i just want to be allowed to be miserable for an hour or more lol.
Well sorry for long post....the questions???
TIA 😘

congratulations on your 6 weeks anniversary !
So you will be about 8 weeks post-op at your follow up visit ...
are you getting an x-ray?
This is my story - An x-ray was taken right before the appointment .. like you I had many questions in my head, made a list .. I didn't really got a chance - Surgeon looked at x-ray , said it looked good - had to lie down and he manipulated my leg to check range of motion , lenght of legs and made me take a couple of steps -told me to mind the 90 degree rule a bit longer, if comfortable I can drive and ditch the cane - repeat on follow up after 2nd THR -
any pain, discomfort etc. I felt and will feel is part of healing and out the door I was .... delighted that I passed !!!
so basically he answered all my questions I had at that time before I asked them - the rest, the ones that will come up later, I asked here ...
mention what you feel and are worried about (so write that down) if he didn't address them ... if you feel that physical therapy will help you, ask for it -
so:
90 degree rule,
driving
sleeping on side
having sex
any sports you want to do
things like this maybe...
I know, nobody understands unless you had THR surgery yourself ... it is a lonely journey -- thank God for this forum -
always come here okay ....
big warm hug

We're at the same stage, I'm 6 weeks tomorrow and I've got my 6 week check on Friday. When I think of a question I put it in my notes on my phone, some of my questions will be the 90 deg rule, driving and sleeping on side but like Renee says, I think that will all be covered anyway but it's nice to have a checklist. The main thing I'm bothered about is if my operated leg will be strong enough for 2nd op at the end of June oh and if I'll be able to fly 12-14 weeks after that because I can feel a couple of weeks in the sun coming on after all this !! Well deserved I think ☺️

I work in a hospital microbiology lab, a 60 mile round trip daily. Had 12 full weeks off followed by a phased return. I asked to be referred for hydrotherapy and physio therapy via OH when I started back at my return to work interview.
Was tired the first few weeks back but fine after that.
Have sent to NJR for full implant details

I have found going to a physio a big help so I would ask your surgeon or GP for a referral if you feel you need it. The physio is waiting for me now to have restrictions removed so I can have further exercises. Have a look at youtube for some useful excercises.
I am not sure what the surgeon will have to say today he is very cautious, so ready for moving on a bit. I am not ready for work at the moment but anticipate I'll be back in a month or so hopefully. I'll probably know better after today. Take care and heal at your own pace.

Biggies included: any restrictions related to favourite activities (swimming, biking, hiking, skiing), whether antibiotics were needed for dental work, how to reduce sensitivity of scar/incision and criteria to judge when to go for the 2nd THR.
I also asked about stem cell regeneration of cartilage (not quite at patient stage in Canada) and information about my specific implants (he gave me a copy of the operation report)! And how to improve my sleep pattern.
Good luck.

I still feel 'knackered' and I am over 29 weeks post operation, and 19 weeks post revision. Back at work in London, but find it extremely tiring.

Just to let you know the outcome of my post op meeting, the surgeon was very nice and went through my progress even including my husband asking how he felt I was doing, he said I would experience some pain at various times in my recovery. He said I could drive, lay on my side, stomach etc in bed. But I should take thing slowly. I should keep taking meds as I need them and the 90deg rule stays for life or as long as I remember, he said most people forget all the rules as time goes on and he smiled. I have a follow up appt in 3 month. I have to say I thought how he'd been very cautious at my op time I thought he was going to be more strict.
I see my physio on Thursday so I have million questions for him. I feel very lucky to be in an area where we have wonderful choices of where we go for treatment and seem to have good aftercare too.

you are very lucky to have great aftercare - kind of sad that this is not the norm but an exception
