RA medication in pregnancy

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site so be gentle... I am just a couple of weeks pregnant and have been on Sulphasalazine and Hydroxychloroquine for 4 months. I know the doctors say these drugs are safe in pregnancy but equally there have been no tests done on actual pregnant ladies. Have any of you stayed on these meds throughout pregnancy or come off them for fear of harming your baby?

Hi Natasha and welcome.
first of all many congratulations on your lovely news
Being a granny, I'm not able to help with your concerns over taking these meds during your pregnancy and I can well understand that you may be a little worried. I'm wondering if you have googled the question? I've just had a quick look and there does seem to be a few concerns so it may well be worth doing a little research. Hopefully other members will be able to help also. Best wishes x

you need to talk to you rheumo, as well a obstitician.
They may need to watch you xtra carefully to make sure you have no problems.
My daughter has an underlying health issue and I know where you are coming from, specialists very wary of her getting pregnant, but she weighed up the issues and we now have two lovely grandsons with no damage to her either.
I had to make the hardest choice not to get involved, she was in her 30's when she went ahead, I got really scared as I have seen her right though from when she was first diagnosed, but we all survived.
She has a very deep brain tumor of they don't know what, cannot even test it, not worth the potential damage, let alone killing her or turning her into a vegetable to get at it while she is well, and they weren't sure the growth hormones of pregnancy would affect it.
Dr's have told us eventually sub-celluar tissue saving lasers will be able to burn it out, but not there yet, although I believe they are working on it, and she is up there on the lists for when it is safe, sees professor of neurology once a year or so, everything stable.
Best wishes

I'm in a similar boat. I've gone off MTX for 3 months and my rheumatologist says it's safe to try to get pregnant now while staying on the hydroxychloroquine. She did say this has not been studied in an RCT, so technically the drug is classed as potentially harmful, but she seemed quite clear that it would be fine to stay on it throughout the pregnancy. She said my age is a bigger issue (closing in on 40). She referred me to a medical obstetric service (pregnancy medicine for women with underlying medical conditions) but I don't have my first appointment there for a couple months yet.
I'm not worried about staying on the plaquenil. It's keeping my symptoms pretty well managed and I trust the doctor - but I will find out more.
