Racing Heart and Insomnia

Hello ladies,

Just need to vent about the two symptoms that have taken over my life in the past week or so: racing heart and insomnia. Every night, just as I am dozing off, I jerk awake and my heart starts racing. Then I am unable to fall asleep until the early morning hours, at which point my alarm goes off and I have to get up to go to work. I am always tired and have a hard time concentrating on my job. And, as if that is not bad enough, the heart racing now also happens during the day just out of the blue, for no particular reason. I am not running around or exercising, just sitting at my desk. It's a strange, discomforting feeling, like my heart is going to jump out of my chest.

Is there anything I can do about this? I welcome any and all ideas.

Thank you!

Dana

hi Dana. I have the exact same. Have had it all summer. dr said anxiety. soooo anxiety=antidepressants of course. didn't want them but went on them twice! first time i thought i didn't give it enough time (21 days) so went back on just lately. now going off again because the side effects are brutal!! coming off them isnt easy either. so i guess im saying DON'T go on meds! i guess, if possible, try hard to settle down with your thoughts. i know first hand thats not easy but better than meds. good luck. almost forgot, have meds to sleep too. trying to get off of them also. again, forgot to mention i am waiting for a sleep apnea test. they say a 4 month wait due to COVID ugh!

      Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you. I'm now trying melatonin and magnesium. I've been sleeping better during the last week or so. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

      Be well!

magnesium plus my dr taught me something that worked wonders. Once your racing heart starts take a deep breath in then without letting out any air pinch both nostrils tightly, then bring down your chin to chest . hold for 5 seconds let out air then repeat. This helped greatly when i was at work or in public it magically slows down your heart rate. In time your racing heart will end. When i entered peri 5 yrs ago this was one of my worst symptoms, thank God I don't have it any more. take care.
