Radial Flap Tear Meniscus

Its been a long couple months but I finally have a diagnosis!! After seeing three doctors, I finally sought an opinion from an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee joints.

I have a flap tear in my meniscus, the tear is right behind my kneecap which is causing my kneecap to pop in and out of place. Which is extremely painful, also my kneecap now normally sits slightly shifted to the right of my knee joint instead of where it should be, and I have developed arthritis.

Has anyone had a similar injury? Or had to deal with a flap tear? The doctor proposed a "tune up" type surgery where he would go in arthroscopically and removed the damaged cartilage and smooth over the bone spurs and rough patches that I've developed from not have most of my meniscus. Has anyone had this type of surgery before? I'm interested if it helped to delay the TKR. This is the ultimate goal, I'd like to be at least in my fifties by the time I need to have my knee replaced. I am 28 now and have already had two ACL reconstructions and they removed most of the my meniscus.

Oh dear you are still very young to be going through this. Do you participate in extreme sport!

i think the surgery you are talking about is the same as I had in February 2015. Where the meniscus is trimmed so that it no longer catches and the bone spurs etc are smoothed down.  Also I had the bones drilled to make them bleed? To hopefully cause scar tissue as a pretend cartilage. I was told this procedure could five me ten months or ten years, everyone is different. It actually bought me just two years as in June 2017 I had a partial knee replacement. However my niece had the same operation at 21 and is still doing great at 30. Also it is something that can be done time and again so keep putting off a replacement. Much much to early at your age. Consider looking into stem cell therapy Nstride you could be an ideal candidate for this where you grow cartilage around an implanted mesh using your own stem cells. I looked into this but the arthritis was too far gone for it to be beneficial.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I was 23 when I first tore my meniscus cartilage doing Taekwondo. I was told at the time it was sprained ligament and the beauty of youth I recovered from it. A couple of years later I tore it further where the meniscus cartilage flopped over so I was unable to straighten my leg, I was left like that for 3 weeks before they decided to do an arthroscopy. I had another arthroscopy in my mid 30s where I was told I needed a TKR but managed to avoid it until I was 47. Bearing in mind this was 25 years ago and technology has moved on since then. There maybe suitable treatment options available now to prolong the life of your knee before having a TKR x
