Raised creatinine + urea + potassium

Posted , 3 users are following.

hello there,

Maybe somone can give me their thoughts.

I was urinating very frequently, usually small anounts. Did a home urine dip test and found white and red blood cells (no nitrate) so went to Dr. who took blood. Blood results = slighly raised creatinine 102 micromol/l, urea 7,3mmol/land potassium 5,05 mmol/l. (At a routine test a year ago creatinine was 62 micromol/l so its a big change)What could this mean? Havent been able to see Dr yet.Have a follow ip appointment in a week.

Thxs so much for yr thoughts.

ps am a 44 year old female 160m tall and 49kilos heavy

Best wishes to all

    Dear ray91776,

I'm so sorry, it must be an awful time for you. I must be honest, i don't know what to write. so wish i could come out with some wonderful news that would inspire you but I can't. But that lovely lady (Mrs.O) said she has lived with one kidney for 60 years.!! So compared to that, you and me are doing well!

I don't want to bore you with my tales of woe, but it was a bit more than a hospital mess-up. But I'm able to get out and help other people, drive where I like and I don't go hungry so I've got much to be grateful for. Think, not sure, so long as your renal system is working at more than 10% you probably won't need dialysis.

And you did say you had 14% !!

So stick to the diet like glue !! And if you do have dialysis, it's just a rest, don't despair.

                                                  Regards,  E.

Thxs so much, just very shocked because I had virtually no symptoms, no pain, no fever, no other signs of infection. it feels a bit like last week I was a totally healthy person and this week it's completely different and yet nothing happened symptomwise. My left kidney is working 14% according to the szintigraphy. this also shows that my right kidney is working szintigraphicallt but that my overall clearance is reduced suggesting the problem might not be limited to the left kidney which doesn't really add up since the left kidney is congested suggesting that there is a blockage somewhere in the ureter/calyx. I will have an MRI tomorrow evening and hopefully the cause of the blockage will be evident and then they will put a stent (double-J) in as soon as possible to try and relieve the kidney and see if we can save some of its function. Im just so exhausted and shocked from the events of the last 6 days!

Yes, Ray, it must be a shock for you to find yourself going through all this, especially when you were fairly symptom-less.  Although I know how difficult it must be, it isn't long until the MRI now, so do try not to worry as this will only serve to increase your blood pressure further.  With your left kidney not working efficiently at present, you are bound to have slightly lower functioning than someone with two perfectly normal working kidneys, but with the correct treatment (stenting perhaps), it is possible that your eGFR will improve, or at least stabilise.  Lots of good luck wishes for tomorrow.

ps according to my docs and this wiki entry a gfr under 90% is too low and 57% is stage 3 CKD so how can 57% be just a little low? Have I perhaps misunderstood something?

    Here's the wiki chart:

    CKD stageGFR level (mL/min/1.73 m2)

    Stage 1≥ 90

    Stage 260 – 89

    Stage 330 – 59

    Stage 415 – 29

    Stage 5< 15>

I was told by a renal consultant that when the Government introduced eGFR testing some 10 years ago, it was to establish whether reducing kidney function was due to an ageing process or a disease process.  He said that they are not concerned about people being in Stage 3.  (I am in Stage 3 at eGFR around 44).  So I asked in that case why was it referred to as "Disease" (Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3).  He replied that it certainly was an unfortunate name but the Americans had introduced it so we had to live with it!  At the time, I contacted the National Kidney Federation and they told me that on the introduction of the test, half the country was being diagnosed with CKD Stage 3!  Most of my friends, including my hubby, have a reading of 60, although of course we are considered amongst the aged population.  All the very best for tomorrow and do let us know how you get on.

in hospital, i think i have ormonds disease

Ray, that sounds like a fairly rare condition.  However, now that they have an idea what is wrong they will hopfully be able to treat the blockage, and perhaps prescribe steroid medication or something similar to help in your recovery.  I have plenty of experience with steroids, and I know they are not harmful to the kidneys - they are, in fact, often prescribed for certain kidney conditions.  Chin up and stay positive.

    Hi there Ray91776,

Hope you are comfortable? Well it would respectful to say I've never heard of Ormonds disease. But it did sound as though there was some kind of blockage in your system. Although this will mean an operation at least the mystery will be over and you will know what you have to endure to get well.

The website I looked at gave a 90% chance of total recovery, which (lets face it) is pretty good odds.! You will probably have yukkie drugs for a while but at least you have a solution. So thinking of you and hoping you are on the down-hill side of illness.

I've got to see the specialist today, a few raised eyebrows at my inability to lose weight no doubt !

So please keep positive, make some plans for the future.

                                                 Regards,  Eric F.
