Ramipril and a cough!

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have been on Ramipril 2.5mg for 2 months, other than an upset tum for the first couple of weeks I have been fine. Yesterday I went back to the Dr for a BP check. I was amazed my bottom figure had come down from 105 to 94. Even though she said this was more acceptable, she would be happier for it come down further. So, we have decided to double my dose and see how I go on. After taking only one 5mg tab yesterday I have spent the most of the night coughing! I am hoping that this will settle down once my body adjusts, but after reading some of these comments I am beginning to wonder! At the moment I feel the benefits of the drug are worth it, but I may be thinking differently if the cough continues. yours hopefully!

    sad Hi

With reference to your cough, I am also on Ramipril and started on 1.25 going upto 10mg.

The higher the dose the worse the cough, one of my friends told me that it will wear off after 2 years, but at time I find myself retching bring up bile in the process, Ive been check for a substitute to no avail.

NHS doctors are reluctant to change medicines.

    Have you any ideas

    Regards

I have been taking ramipril since April when the doc had to change my blood pressure medication when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was prescribed 5mg daily and at first had no problems as I was taking it alongside Atenolol. In July the atenolol was stopped and I suddenly developed a terrible cough which was making me bring up bile. (Not very nice). I suffered the cough for around 8 weeks before going to docs. By this time I was exhausted as it was interfering with my sleep. Doctor explained that one in so many people develop this cough whilst taking ramipril. He has now prescribed irbesartan which he said is a much better product but too expensive to prescribe to everyone. He seemed quite pleased to have an excuse to prescribe this medication. He also advised that it would take around 4 to 6weeks for the cough to disappear.

I was prescribed Ramipril 2.5 mg after a CABG op and developed a very irritating cough. My GP put me on Approvel (Irbesartan 150mg). That was 4 months ago and haven't had any sign of a cough for over 3 months and my BP is fine - I'm 60 and it's 120/70. I also take Bisoprolo and Atorvastation 40 mg.
