Ramipril cough

Have been on Ramipril now for about 5 months and the only side effects I have noticed is that damed cough and a very dry mouth especially overnight.

The cough isn't all the time but once it starts with a dry tickle at the back of your throat it can be quite a vigorous bout of coughing. This sometimes makes your chest ache and the immediate thought is here we go again.

The dry mouth is a real pain and any amount of drinks or boiled sweets dont make much difference.

It is Ramipril that causes all your symptoms it is a cheap nasty drug go back to your doctors and insist on coming off it. We ended up down the A and E because no one would listen and my husband had severe bad reaction to it that caused hives all over his body for 12 weeks and his face swelled up it all started with a cough! So don't be fobbed off he still isn't right and has stopped taking the drug months ago it takes ages to get it out of your system. He is now on steriods to try and make him better has different blood pressure tablets and strong anti hystamines which don't control the hives. If this doesn't work he will have to be admitted to hospital for treatment. Thank God for a good doctor at the A and E who said straight away it that Ramipril has caused this and yes a dry cough and hives are listed as side effects! Don't suffer in silence the doctors know what this drug does but it is cheap and that is why they keep giving it out. In my opinion it wants banning its dangerous!

I everyone, I have been taking Ramipril for about 12 months but the dose has recently been upped to 10mg I am 47 and also take 2.5mg of Bendroflouramethazide and 2.5mg of Amolodopine. For the last month I have had the type of cough you describe. I cough to the point of being sick, it is very debilitating.

My Doctor has given me salbutamol inhalers to counteract the cough, these have had no effect, so yesterday I made the decision to stop taking Ramipril, I figure the other two meds must be doing some of the job of lowering my bp and I would rather my bp was slightly high than live with this awful cough. How long does it usually take for the cough to disappear once you stop taking the Ramipril??

    Hi all

I was on exactly the same 3 drugs as Wendy. I asked to be taken off Ramipril because of the cough and have not looked back. My nurse substituted Ramipril with Losartin and I have been on it for a year now with my BP controlled at 120/65. It took only a few weeks for the cough to disappear after I came off Ramipril. Keep the

faith and keep this blog going until Ramipril gets a worldwide ban.

My cough started in February this year the same time I started Ramipril but I never put the two together at

first but eventually looked up the side affects and went back to my doctor who took me off it and said it would clear up in two weeks that was about 2 months ago and its now been 5 months. I have had an xray which

shows my chest is clear but I have an enlarged heart since when he removed the ramipril knowing I had

very high bp but didn't prescribe another as he was waiting for the cough to go. Like everyone else the

coughing and retching has left me in pain and recently it has been so bad that I have been coughing blood. I now have to see a specialist but after speaking to others the ramipril does not agree with everyone and the side effect of the cough needs to be highlighted and doctors need to let patients know what to

expect and react quicker to taking patients off it once it develops because sitting and worrying that you

may have something seriously wrong is not the nicest and has been what has scared me about

returning to the dr's when the cough did not go after two weeks as stated by the dr.

I am now on 100mg of Losartan instead due to now having an enlarged heart in the aim of trying to bring my bp down

      Hi De11

I was wondering if your chest pains and coughing has subsided. I hope it was nothing more sinister?

    Hi De11

Thank you for sharing your experience I'm sorry to hear it has left you with an enlarged heart maybe the Doctor needs to take some responsibility for not prescribing an alternative quicker.

Hi. Started taking Ramipril 8 months ago. No cough but excessively dry mouth overnight and dry peelng skin on palms of hands and soles of feet and Rhinitis. Never had any of these problems before taking this drug. I am diabetic type 2 so dryness could be due to this. However I have my suspicions it is the Ramipril so contacted my GP yesterday who has taken me off Ramipril and is trying me on Valsartan. Anyone else had skin problems with ramipril?

I 'm also a Type 2 Diabetic but have not expirience any skin problems. I have stopped taken Ramipril 1 week ago and at times I think the cough seems to be getting better but today has been bad again. Any idea how long before I see an improvement?

I tried this for 9 days only. The cough nearly drove both me and others in the house mad. It disturbed my sleep and generally I felt out of sorts. Advised by my local pharmacist to stop taking it and go back to my doctors - which I did. Have since tried 2 other medications and am going for a third!

Had open heart surgery to replace Mitral Valve in October and one of the cocktail of pills they gave me was Ramipril, to be taken at night. Caught a lousy cold two and half weeks ago and the cough is really dry tickling and persistent! Having to sleep upright and managing 3-4 hours a night, even after 7 days antibiotics! Made apt to see GP tomorrow and was told it could be the Ramipril causing cough! Wish someone had thought of this earlier!

Just found this after being awake half the night with this horrible irritating cough!

got fed up and googled the symptoms and this popped up, never gave it a thought that my medication could be causing all this, thought I may have a sinus infection! Dry eyes, back of my throat, feels like something. running down the back of it and have to cough it up ...once you start you can't stop, my chest starts to feel heavy and sore after a while. Sometimes a drink or a mint relieves it for a while, dry mouth... I am only on 2.5mg of Ramapril ... well that's me of to the docs to get it seen to! I was becoming really worried there might be something very wrong, but this all fits... thank you all :D

Since writing a report a few months ago am glad to say that at long last that horrible cough seems to be getting better - it's taken about 5-6 months!

Have since tried Losartan and Candasarton, but still suffered from "that cough". I am now on Valsartan 80mg once a day and at long last I feel I am making some headway, fingers crossed.

I have been suffering with the Ramipril cough for the last 5 weeks getting worse each day. Went to GP thismorning and changed my prescription to Amias candesartan 8 mg. Will let you know if it works in about 2 weeks time. Strange thing is I have been on 10mg of Ramipril for over two years without any problems???

I am now on 10mg ramipril and have the dreaded tickly throat and cough. my Gp put me on Codeine Phosphate 15mg to combat it. I generally have about 2 a day (not enough for me to notice it) and it so far seems to be controlling it. Ask your GP it may be worth a try.
