Ramipril cough

Have been on Ramipril now for about 5 months and the only side effects I have noticed is that damed cough and a very dry mouth especially overnight.

The cough isn't all the time but once it starts with a dry tickle at the back of your throat it can be quite a vigorous bout of coughing. This sometimes makes your chest ache and the immediate thought is here we go again.

The dry mouth is a real pain and any amount of drinks or boiled sweets dont make much difference.

was on amlodipine 5mg but it caused hair loss. My doctor put me on ramipril 4wks ago. Ive had this terrible cough for 3 wks thats got worse ,so today ive stopped taking it. I thought my granddaughter had given it to me at first , then i looked online and read these  comments. I wont go out until this cough goes as im drinking quite a lot of water to try to keep my throat moist . Once i get a coughing fit its crossed legs time as it continues for a few minutes . My head and chest ache from the strain of coughing. There are no appointments available at my health centre at all so il try to speak to the doctor on the phone .   Its realy making me ill as sleeps hard as well. Ive never had side effects with other medicines before ,just these blood pressure ones. how can i help soothe my throat  anyone, please?

I know how you feel with the crossed legs....it's so inconvenient and uncomfortable. I've just been taking cough syrup, simple linctus to help my throat and making sure I have something to suck on. It's ridiculous. I knew there could be this side effect but it's ruining my life as I don't want to go out either because of the crossed legs moments and the fact it makes me throw up. Hope your doctor helps. Xx

I started ramipril in March and developed a cough that never seems to go away. Had it 9 weeks now, went to see a different doctor last week and he said oh it can't be the medication (I had a cold at the time) cos ramipril doesn't cause phlegm. Even tho I explained that the cold was recent and the phlegm was a side effect of that not the ramipril. Anyway I then spoke to my regular doctor and he immediately said no problem, we will change you to a different one. I can't remember what it's called but I'm picking it up today and I am hoping the cough just goes away. I've even pinched my daughters inhaler because I just can't stop coughing and it's making me throw up. I'm praying the new meds help and get rid of it because I'm tired of it. Can't even go to my sons school assembly on Friday because I know I won't get thru it without a coughing fit and don't want to disturb it. 😖

Don't worry, it's definitely the Ramipril. I suffered with the dreaded cough, together with many others  There are many alternative version of drugs out there as your doctor well knows, but Ramipril is cheap!  I have tried many drugs, it is a case of elimination until you find one that suits. I am on Valsartan, but this doesn't suit everyone.  Keep on trying different ones. Don't expect to get rid of your cough immediately -- it took me months!

Hi Betty. How many months before your cough stopped? I'm starting to lose hope.

I stopped taking it and within the last 5 days the cough has SIGNIFICANTLY improved. It's still here but it's not making me sick and I feel much better. I'm on amlodipine now, see how that goes. I'm so glad it went because I had lumbar puncture today, I could just imagine trying to keep still while hacking through the procedure, I mentioned the cough without saying which Med I had been on and the anaesthetist who was helping said immediately ' oh was that ramipril ' and they all nodded a bit and said about how awful it can be. I personally think maybe they should stop prescribing it, I'm sure it doesn't affect everyone but the cough is a severely unpleasant side effect! I hope everyone who has one gets over it soon or has a sympathetic doctor who will listen and help. Thankfully my team is fabulous. Xx

I stopped taking Ramipril 3 months ago because of the horrible cough. Everything I read told me that the cough would subside after a few weeks, but this hasn't happened for me. I still have the horrible cough that makes me gag, choke and sometimes vomit. I've never had anything like this in my life, it all started with being on Ramipril for just 6 weeks. I don't know why for me it didn't stop when I stopped the drug. It has been destroying my life. I have a coughing fit at least once every hour and it wakes me up through the night. I don't know if the coughing will ever stop for me. I think Ramipril has permanently damaged my body.

    Hi,

I too have the same cough, it can be so embarrassing, I'm almost choking. My doctor told me it was a Ramipril cough and changed them to Losartan 50mg, that was almost two weeks ago and I still have the cough.

I too have dry cough just as you describe it

I thought it was that fact I given up smoking nearly 4 months now

After reading this I'm thinking it the ramipril that's doing it and I'm only on my 3rd week of taking these can pills

I have just been prescribed Ramipril. I have not had any medication in relation to high blood pressure  before.

Feel a bit like a failure that I couldn’t deal with this without it!

I realise all these posts are years old but just thought I would still post something in the hope of seeing if anyone manages to stay with this drug or how they managed with the alternatives....or indeed if anyone managed to control things without the medication?
