ramipril prescription still in pocket

I am 54 yr old woman, and have been told that I have kidney damage stage 3 and high bp - the gp is very keen that I take these meds - my bp reading is around 140/150 over 105. The doc says that she is not sure which came first, the kidneys causing hbp or the hbp. No further tests have been offered but unless the bp comes down I will lose more kidney function - very scary.

However Im reluctant to take this medication with having a history of drug sensitivity and there is no guarantee that it will not cause further kidney damage - they said they would monitor me for any possible damage with blood tests and my reply is that by then, its too late. OOOps sorry but you have lost further kidney function and lets try another drug.

So this week I have given up smoking, (was a light smoker) will avoid all alcolhol (light drinker) all salt (didnt use much before) and go on a low protein vegetarian type diet to see if I can achieve myself, what the tablets promise, without the side-effects. I have been inspired to some extent by a natural practioner ***, who is on a crusade to educate us about the power of natural foods etc., so will give it a try first for 3 months and then if the bp is high I will take the meds.

So thats my story and I have been in a state of shock about the diagnosis and just want to help myself as best I can -before taking what I percieve, and have a gut feeling about, is a poison.

(With all due respect and apologies, to those who it is helping)

Hi, (I'm same person/some mixup with the username) just to say that after 5 days of not smoking and a big change in diet to vegetarian natural whole foods, I had a bp reading today of 134/87. Thats 20 points lower on the top scale and about 10 points on the lower scale. I'm overjoyed and feel confident of avoiding ramipril.

I am now hopeful that I can improve the kidney function as well, just through the power of vegetarian natural whole foods.

I still have cravings for cigarettes, chocolate biscuits, chips etc. but just keep thinking I'd rather be alive.

I am a slim person who is fairly active, walk about a mile or two every day( and now go out even if its raining to get the exercise. ) I cannot afford to join a gym but, Im saving money on food now, so maybe I can afford it in time.

I will keep posting and let everyone know each month how Im doing - if I can give up smoking after 32 years then you can, and the food is natures own and delicious.

I've never been a lentil eating hippy but now feel the call.

If it works for you and why join the gym anyway. I am male with BP problem on Ramipril 10mg. I replied on one of the other threads that I was able to bring my BP down a good bit last year when I stopped milk and cheese. My BP is 154/93 so like you I still need to bring it down. Good luke with your efforts.

Hi, just to let everyone know how im doing without ramipril. With a healthier lifestyle (war time style diet) cutting down on smoking and only 1 glass of wine at night, I have managed to bring down the bp to 120/130 over 80/90 so having some success. Havent had a kidney function test as im now living out in the wilds of Almeria, spain and feel so well I am just living life to the full, and wouldnt go back to the sedentary, boring and unhealthy lifestyle i had.

We all get sick but have to take more resposibility for our own recovery and Im not one for going into the docs like a lamb. I find the attitude of doctors most annoying, they look briefly at you and then focus on the pc screen while reaching for the prescription pad. What has this western world come to when the healers dont touch or look at you anymore.

An ex-doctor friend has told me that the gps get a bonus from the drug company that produces ramipril if they can get 70% of their high blood pressure patients on the drug. I believe her.

So now i feel even more cynical of the pill pushing medics, not everyone can change their lifestyle, but if more of us tried then we wouldnt have to rely on chemicals which can cause even more problems than are solved.

If you are suffering with this medication then please try to find another drug free solution - dont just take their opinion as gospel truth.

Anyhow, again my apologies to anyone this drug has helped, but from my point of view its a road to nowhere but more suffering, and is avoidable.

I might die eventually from kidney failure, but it will be on my own terms and not like a victim of an illness - more like a lion fighting.

My best wishes for all who are ill, love 'r'
