random uti please help

So last night i went home early from work because I got a UTI.went straight to the doctor who gave me a new antibiotic (trimethroprim) because she didnt want me taking the same one every time (I've had quite a few in my 22 years). It was fine and I was even able to go to uni the next day, but out of no where it flared up so bad that I had to go home and am now bed ridden with usual insane uti pain. Ive gone back and gotten cephalexin which is my normal one, and it went away again within 24 hours. Was trimethoprim the wrong antibiotic to use?

Can urinary tract infection pains just come out of nowhere and hit that quick?

with previous infections I've had the pain hit me like a truck. Fine one minute, then as soon as I go to the bathroom the pain comes and i didnt even know I would have an infection until then. The pain is the first symptom i usually get and im almost immediately bed ridden with cramps.

Hi there, Trimethoprim is aimed at UTI's it's what I am prescribed and within a day my symptoms have all but gone, I'm afraid I can't help RE your pains as mine are never that bad and go quickly, the only pain I experience really is when I pee.

      Hi Phoebe,

Thankyou for responding. It turns out that the antibiotic hadn't completely kicked in yet according to my GP. I just needed to be more patient, which under the circumstnaces is hard when you're in that much pain in such a sensitive area. thank you!

    Hi Danielle,

I am really sad to hear about your story but just know that you are not alone.

I’ve been getting UTIs since I was 12 years old. Now I am almost 21.

For the past 1 year I have had UTI infection every month I have been on 7 different courses of antibiotics. I have been in hospital once for 7 days also for it.

My symptoms were the same as yours – my pain came out of nowhere and for those many years I never knew what triggered it. L

One day I was fine and the next day or couple hours later I was dying from pain in my urethra, burning pain when peeing, etc (you know how it works).

It was funny how a couple of hours later I was all fine, no pain, nothing. Next day – like nothing happened. And after one day everything came back from the beginning.

Nothing could help me, no antibiotics, no doctors, no pain killers. L

Doctors just didn’t know what caused my UTI because all looked fine – perfect urine tests, no bacteria, nothing in the blood test, no change in the structure of the bladder or urethra. Perfect working kidneys. Some even said I was making everything up… L

Now I haven’t got an UTI for a while and I think I found out finally what was causing my UTIs. J

I have always had problems with my period and I am always late, some months it doesn’t even come .. Therefore my estrogen levels change and this is causing my UTIs.

Now for the past 2 weeks I’ve been eating this superfood called Maka (google maka roots). I’ve been having 1 teaspoon in some Greek yoghurt every morning and every evening.

I haven’t had any pain in my urethra, I haven’t had burning feeling when I pee. Everything is gone now, I can’t believe it but this was what was triggering my UTIs. I can’t know if your case is the same but please check your hormonal levels next time you are seeing your doctor and ask him if this can be causing your UTIs too. J

    I hope this was helpful!

    Wish you all the best!

      Hi Elena,

thankyou for responding. I am lucky enough to not have it as bad as you. I always fear that the bacteria will become immune to the antibiotics, but I've been told by my GP that having two UTI's a year is not going to cause any issues with that, thank goodness. So I feel a little more at ease. I've looked up the Maca roots online and can get them in tablet form at the local supermarket! I'm going to try them straight away. Thank you!
