Range of movement

I wonder if anyone would know how much movement I should have 5 weeks post scarf osteotomy and Atkins. I have had no specific instructions aside from surgeon telling me to wiggle toes as much as possible. No physio not seeing consultant ununtil the 17th June. Foot still stiff and able to move big toe back and forth but only about 45 degree angle, anyone further along ??

I am at 3 week stage after the same op and like you have just been told to manipulate my toe up and down. I am not sure how much and whether one should do it as far as possible through the pain barrier. I am afraid to do any damage. I keep comparing the movement to the big toe on my other foot and still along way to go, I would say I have less than 40 degree movement. I would also appreciate more advice.

I had a scarf osteotomy 16 weeks ago. Only after my 6 week review was I told to start pushing the ROM of the toe. You will presumably be given exercises after your next appointment with your surgeon to increase your ROM. It will be sore to begin as you will be advised to push and pull, your toe and push up and down on your toes several times a day. My toe was also X rayed on this day to check everything was healing properly, so do not start these exercises until you are given the official go ahead. Good luck with your recovery.

one thing you will learn from this site is that recovery can be a long process. I am very active I like walking, long distance cycling, going to the gym and playing table tennis. General walking I can do with only slight discomfort, if I do a walk lasting 2 hours my foot swells up underneath and I need to elevate it. I was allowed to cycle on low resistance after 6 weeks. Walking is the hardest. You have to literally go through the pain barrier and stop yourself walking on the outside of your foot, but it does get better. It may be worthwhile investing in some cushioned/gel inner soles - somebody else on this site may have good info. on these as you will find that gravity pulls the swelling to the ball,of your foot and makes it uncomfortable to walk any distance. My foot is improving all the time. Apparently it takes 6 months for the bone to fully heal and the problem with a toe operation is that all your weight goes through it. You will gt there in the end, but it is small steps. Excuse the pun! Best of luck.

at five weeks I could move my big toe and the one next to it wiggling them both backwards and forwards. All of our bodies are different and if you can wiggle your big toe at five weeks I would say you are doing well.

i have had same procedure as you I have been to see a physio this morning , it seems the pain I'm getting in my ankle and ball of my foot is because I'm walking on the outsides of my feet , she has suggested I by some cushions for my feet , I think they are called party feet , the gel support goes on ball of foot , I have to go back in 2 weeks to see if this helps , anything is worth a try
