Ranitidine advice needed

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have taken PPI's for about twenty years for acid reflux, Hiatus Hernia , duodenal ulcers etc. I started with Nexium which was probably thse most effective later as usual in the UK switched to cheaper generic brands and at other times all the other PPI's.

A couple of times I was prescribed Ranitidine that I Vaguely felt did not agree with me. Recently my stomach problems have been worse and my GP prescribed 300mg Ranatidine to be taken at night with as the PIF says a glass of water. Does night mean last thing at night as I don't want to down a glass of water before laying down or can I take it in the late evening and later have a snack and a milk drink before going to bed or even take it with milk.

With other meds our pharmacist says that a glass of water is not needed just enough to swallow them. What is the object of taking 300 mg at night rather than a lower dose morning and night ?

The tablets are not scored so is it OK to use a pill cutter to cut them in half or does its inner being exposed speed up its effect.

Since taking it I have had a headache which is very unusual for me.

Did your GP stop your PPI or are you adding ranitidine to it? (ie/ PPI in am & ranitidine at bedtime). If adding to PPI, GP is likely trying to get 24-hour coverage of your symptoms. Acid reflux can occur when you are lying down at night. It is also a good idea to avoid eating too close to bedtime (some docs say no food within 3 hours of bedtime-which really interferes with my midnight snack!!). The idea is that if you lie down with food still in your stomach, the acids released for digestion can more easily "leak" into your esophagus. If you are having symptoms at night (or waking up with reflux first thing in the morning) i would snack earlier in the evening. I would try to take ranitidine within 1 hour of bedtime. (4 ounces of water should be sufficient). Most ranitidine tablets can be halved without significantly changing the speed of effect. (but double check with your pharmacist).I know headache is a side effect of ranitidine, but often goes away within 1 to 2 weeks of regular use. Hope this helps!!

He stopped the PPI. I was just about out of them anyway. I would not like the headache like I i have had today for two weeks lf it is actually the Ranitidine that caused it. The headache more or less went this evening. I have just taken half of one at 11pm UK time. If I waken up with reflux I either take Gaviscion or chew two Bisodol.

you don't need to have a whole glass of water when taking a tablet just the amount you need. Doctors usually advise against milk drinks with reflux as they usually contribute towards the acid. In the old days doctors used to advise patients to take milk to cure stomach acid problems, but now doctors advise against it because of the lactic acid.

Yeah, my doctor is very much against milk. It still seems quite controversial whether it is good or bad.

We are not designed to drink cows milk which contains lactose and unless we have enough Lactase (the enzyme necessary to break down LACTOSE) we have issues with it and though it contains calcium, good for acidity, we produce more hydrochloric acid.

We are victims of what we consume

maybe lactose free milk could be ok though.

I am thinking of trying a herbal alternative to ppis someone recommended mastic gum tablets and I was also looking in to milk thistle tablets.

PPis give me bruxism which makes my jaw click out of place and ranitidine makes me dizzy.

I went to a Homeopath in 1983 and the treatment helped me for about seven years. I went to another one when the problem came back but her treatment did not help.

Humans have been drinking cows milk for thousands of years. Is goats milk any better ?

Just because humans have been doing something, probably not thousands of years but for a long time, doesnt mean that its ok, just means its happened. The only milk totally suitable for humans is produced by the human mother, however try plant based 'milks' they are very similar and dont come with the same dietary issues. Whole bean organic soya is creamy, cashew nut is slightly sweeter if thats your preference.

l have replied with what lve used as a life changing diet for myself, its waiting to be moderated.

I cannot recommend it more, its pretty radical but if youre in pain and really want to alleviate the issues, then youll try it. No need for drugs and their side effects.

liquorice herbal tea if you like aniseed, is very soothing and causes me no issues thankfully!

I think lactose free milk comes from cows, I think they add lactase which breaks down the lactose. Try it and see if you get on with it. Google lactose free milk and how is it made you can find out. I used to be ok with cows milk, but have developed an intolerance as I have got older. I tried some when I had gastritis and the pain increased to an unbearable degree. I have thought about trying lactose free milk and products but never have got round to it.

I am not sure about goats milk, all I know is most people who are used to cows milk do not like it!

Homeopathy is different to a lot of health food shop products. I have tried homeopathy for a number of different problems without any help at all. Certain tablets with extracts of plants have helped certain symptoms. The only trouble is the products can be a lot weaker than proper medicine and they can give side effects which are not listed on the leaflet.

have you had gastritis and oesophagitis? I have suffered a lot with my stomach over the years. I am willing to try another option than ppis because I have been on them for years. I try and stop them from time to time but always end up going back because my symptoms come back.

Absolutely, all my life, had endoscopies.. been lucky so far. lve had the hiatus hernia from birth, enhanced by bulimia and anorexia in my teens.

lve posted many time on here over the past few years but this diet is the only thing that has then the pin away, ld do anything to rid myself of the pain waking me up all night, esp when stressed and guzzling down gaviscon. lf l have to eat this way for life, l will. lm sure you understand how the pain dictates your life and makes it so miserable.

For me No Way! I hated plant based substitutes I tried in the past.

Do you trust health food shop products ? Trust Me I'm a Doctor did a programme about them. They all varied in content and some did not even contain what was supposed to be in them and that included our two major retailers. Talk about Big Pharma profits. Certain Health Food shops can afford 50% off sales every other month then say Last Day another 15% off.

some depression and anxiety health food shop products have worked better than things I have been prescribed and also have had much less side effects. homeopathy has been proved to be just water tablets, certain things like evening primrose oil in the correct amount has been proved to help with breast pain and some doctors actually advise patients to use it. The trouble with health food shop products is they are not tested in the same way pharmaceutical drugs are so there can be amounts different to what are advertised and also you don't always know the side effects or drug interactions.

The healthy 92 year old who lives in Buckingham Palace takes her case of homeopathic remedies wherever she goes.

My wife used to get NHS prescriptions for Evening Primrose Oil but now like homeopathy remedies it can no longer be prescribed.

      They have greatly improved.

my pain and misery would have overcome dislikd

Have you ever tried a homeopathic remedy ? The most obvious ones that convince many people are if you ever have a bad bruise try arnica cream or tablets and it will be gone before you know it. Aconite at the first sign of a cold will stop it in its tracks.

Then if you choose to eat or drink foods that aggravate your condition, lm afraid the pain cant be so bad, l just cant take the pain myself, ld rather go without food stuff l enjoy consuming.

    • Posted

Well said. No point eating foods that aggravate your system EVEN if you could take the pain.

The healthy 92yo also has access to great medical care which none of us know much about. H.M. will outlive us all.
