Rapidly flickering lights in vision?

Hi there,

I'm a 25 year old male, and recently started to worry about this thing i've been having.

So it doesn't seem to be triggered by anything in particular, but occasionally I get these extremely rapid flickers of light (an area occupying roughly 1/5 of my field of vision), lasting a short period of time (1-10 seconds). This tends to happen when i'm in bed, and would happen fairly frequently when I was meditating. The bizzare thing is that I seem to be able to interrupt them by blinking hard, or rubbing my eye. The frequency of these episodes also seems to vary, for example there was a period some months ago where this happened every night, and this morning it happened for the first time in months. They can also happen in either eye. Anyone else experience something similar?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

    Hi Francesco

I had flickering light in one eye a few months ago but mine was constant.

I think it's best to get it checked out if you can. Call the eye doctor and they can advise you over the phone.

I'm a lot older than you at 53, so it's perhaps not the same condition as I have

    ( Posterior Vitreous Detachment)

I think it would put your mind at rest to speak to someone though.

I believe also that it is pvd. It doesnt happen as often at your age,but does happen. About 20% of people in their 20's will have it. Many do not have flashes so they are unaware of it. It is when the gel in your eye starts to liqeufy and pull from the retina. When it pulls is when you get flashes. If you want to get them checked for peace of mind then there is no harm in that. What they will be looking for is to make sure that when it pulls it does not create a tear or hole. When this happens many people have a "black curtain" fall over part of their eye that they can not see. Definitely get in immediately if that happens. At our office we typically ask to see people back a week or two after the flashes have stopped. Because if you are still having the flashes then it is still attached. The flashes are normal as are little squiggly black floaters that you may get and many people do not have a detachment or complications but just make sure to monitor it.
