This rash showed up over two months ago but when it first appeared it was just dry, scaly patches of skin. It comes and goes but now it is painful to touch. Does anyone know what it could be?

That looks like ringworm - which is not a worm but a fungus. Easily treated at home with an antifungal cream.

It's definitely ringworm- a skin infection caused by fungi. An anti-fungal like Fugacil cream can help clear infection in a few days to one week.
