Rash from PMR or prednisone?

Posted , 2 users are following.

I have posted on this forum before; 6 mos. Since diagnosed with PMR.

started on 15 mg pred...then 10...6 days ago down to 9 mg daily.

aside from fatigue have not had any real discern able side-effects...however, I have developed a rash on my upper back...small bumps. Could this be related to the prednisone...or the PMR?...and, if so, what is the solution?

Thanks!

I think it is more likely to be something else that the higher dose of pred you have been on has masked - pred suppresses the immune response so if you have developed an allergy it may not appear.

What is the solution? Maybe a bit of cortisone cream on that area? Identifying the culprit may be difficult. In the early days of PMR I had a bad rash, around my ribs and across my back mainly. It eventually turned out to be to something in wheat (not gluten probably since I can eat other gluten-containing grains with no problem) and not eating wheat products was the answer. PMR is due to an immune system disorder, it means your immune system can cause all sorts of problems as well if you are really unlucky.

Thank you Eileen! It could be a reaction to the sunscreen I use in this dry climate...I will just keep an eye on it.

I should have asked - have you changed anything recently? New washing stuff, new anything that is in contact with your shoulders more than anywhere else - washing stuff tends to affect all over of course.

I have my own itches today - just had a 24 hour ECG which is being repeated as the first one was unacceptable to the doctor reading it. The stick-on pads are driving me NUTS!!!!

Hi Eileen...I will be paying attention to anything I come in contact with as far as the rash. Funny...I am not typically allergic to anything, but last summer when I had a (benign) breast biopsy the surgical tape caused blisters and redness for over a week!...what a mess....and I took the tape off in the proper amount of time too. There was so ething to help with that...I will see if I can find that info.....thank you!

Arnica cream helped with the itchy, stinging blisters from the surgical tape!

Arnica cream??? Really! Will have some handy tomorrow when these blasted electrodes are removed. Bought a new tube in the UK a few weeks ago. I'm not taken with the ring-worm appearance they leave ;-)

I have had the same thing after a biopsy and doctors said it was a latex allergy which is on my records so they will not use latex gloves or surgical tape containing latex. Blisters were really bad as you probably know.
