Re-generation of hip socket cartilage - Is it possible?
Posted , 10 users are following.
Hello,
I had a partial hip replacement over 20 years ago. I fear the cartilage in my hip socket has degenerated to the point where the ball of the prosthesis may be grinding against pelvic bone.
Does anyone know of any methods to re-generate or re-create through artificial means, the hip-socket cartilage?
Thank you....

Hi Nicholas
I have looked into this a fair bit to try and avoid hip surgery but the trials are not providing enough evidence for regeneration. I looked at stem cells and companies claiming they can help but all the people I spoke to or read comments is that it is a waste of money. Sorry.

Hello,
As someone with an 18 year old resurfacing of hip an interesting question, even tho all is well for now for me!
long term I suss stem cell research is promising, but don't think so for now.
So, usual things: get an X ray, don't stop exercise with rest after, and pain killers if necessary
Good luck!

Nicholas,
Maybe this is a question for your doctor. It is something I hoped for for years, I even imagined withdrawing cartilage in a needle, regrowing in a petri dish and injecting into my bad hip doh! Had to succumb in the end and have a hip op.

I hung on for the longest time, hoping that something easier than hip replacement would come along. The surgeon told me that there is not a big emphasis being placed on other methods because hip replacement works so well! Not always! I did check into stem cell, but they looked at my x-rays and said that my arthritis was too far along for stem cells to help.

There was a lady on TV who had a really bad hip which totally regenerated itself after faith healing! They showed xrays to prove it. Perhaps it can be mind over matter or fake news!

I've had a partial hip replacement too and read all about "scaffolding" for stem cell cartilage renewal but seems to be years away and also i'm not sure if the procedure is possible once you've got an implanted stem. Nicholas please tell me, has your hemiarthoplasty really lasted for 20 years! That's fantastic. I'd be overjoyed if mine lasted that long. Why didn't you have a full replacement?

I was hoping that I would not need a new hip stem cell technology was working, but no luck. I think it may be five to ten years away if we are lucky. It seems it will be used on younger people first.

would be amazing if cartilage could be regenerated. Sounds so simple. Just suck out the old stuff and pad the hip with an injection of the new stuff. Hope i live long enough but like you I'm dubious.
