Louise, perhaps you are not having "shingles" outbreks as much as episodes of Post Herpatic Neuralgia. (PHN)  Antiviral do not help much if it is PHN, in fact my PMD told me they can do more harm thn good.

Pain and stress management is key.  It also helps to get plenty of rest and eat healthy.  Gentle exercise, like walking can also help.  And stay out of the sun!  If you must go outside, do it in the early morning hours or after the sun has set.

    Hi Louise,

Try taking Lysine and cutting down or out on caffine. Look for trigger foods and shingles. I to have suffered on going shingles since my 20's I am now 61. Had the vaccine but the shingles still came back.

    HI Louise,

I don't know how old you are, but often if someone gets recurring shingles, their autoimmune system might be impaired. For example, I have had Ramsay Hunt Syndrome-Herpes Zoster Oticus Right Ear, for nineteen years every three to five weeks. It is excruciating. The first thing I would ask your doctor is to be on Famvir or Valtrex, as they are better absorbed and you take them three times a day. You can ask to be on Famvir or Valtrex at a lower dose permanently, to try to suppress getting the shingles. This did not work for me, however.

Does anyone in your family or you have autoimmune diseases Lupus Sjögrens, Rheumatoid Arthritis etc? Are you on corticosteroids? These and much more rarely, cancer would make your immune system more susceptible to Herpes Zoster, or Shingles. It took years, decades, before I was diagnosed with lupus,(I am 63) but my identical twin and I felt we had lupus since our late 20s and we were right.! I hope this helps.
