Reaction to blood thinner

Guys, I've been on Xarelto 10mg since coming home. I started noticing a headache a week ago and this has been getting steadily worse with time. The last 2 nights my head was fit to burst and I had flu-like pains all over my bode, but especially the small of my back and the operated thighs. Phoned dr this am and he says I must keep taking them. Surely not? Are there no alternatives one can pursue?

I also had to take Xarelto for 26 days and I had headaches took some paracetamol and the headaches did get less in frequency as the days went by- I also had a dry mouth and felt very tired. I am happy to say since I finished the tablets I am feeling a bit more energetic. How many days do you have to take Xarelto?

20 more to go. Doc recommended I switch to mornings (???) or, alternatively, fetch some injections from him - similar to the ones I was given into my tummy whilst in hospital. Will keep y'all posted

Hi Annie, i would switch to the injections you can do yourself in the tummy daily that's what i done after my few surgeries even tho I hate needles i done them as i got a DVT after coming home from hospital. My surgeons said the Clexane injections work much better than tablets.

I'm not squeamish. I breed cats and one gets to muck around pretty much.

Yes there are alternatives , and no you shouldnt be suffering like that - i would make appt with GP and ask him to check you over / discuss alternatives ( these may be limited depending on other medical conditions / tablets you take normally) but he / she shouldnt just be dissmissing you like that - Good luck xx

Not sure , xanax isnt a blood thinner in itself . I think the choice of thinners used is down to your local NHS trust pharmacy and Consultant - ive got Tinzaparin injections so a belly full of bruises and 4 more to go to end of course but havent had any side effects as such . Headaches sound horrible and its tough putting up,with those on top of everything else so big hug x

I've got one more Clexane injection to go.  I don't know if it's my imagination but have noticed a pain benhind my eyes shortly after the injection but goes away quite quickly.

Haventnoticed that - then again usually have eyes screwed tightly shut! For a nurse Im a bit of a wimp at self injecting so my lovely other half is doing them for me - i only hope i never inherit my mothers diabetes

I agree! Couldn't get to sleep I was in so much pain .... Took an oxynorm which knocked me out, but woke up feeling quite tired. Took a Stillpain and went back to sleep

I was on Xarelto rivaroxaban for 5 weeks, each time .... there are alternatives, such as heparin, and those injections that some get too.

    Hi Annie,

Wow, 20 more to go ?

i had Fragmin to self inject for 6 weeks !!!  twice !!!   I asked for tablets and was told: NO ... I live in Holland but don't think it is a Dutch thing though -

I can't remember any other side effect except for not feeling all that great after the surgeries and belly so bruised ...

check out the injections ...  As much as I hated hem, I'd prefer them over severe headaches ...

    big warm hug

Well, surgeon has suggested I take the tablets at another time of the day to see whether they still have the same effect. If so, he'll put me on injections. Here's hoping

I'm just about to do my very last injection now, yippee!

I had them for 28 days after surgery, so four weeks for me.  TED stockings for 6 weeks so another 14 days to put up with them.

I've not been able to put my hose back on without great discomfort, so I've left them off with my surgeon's knowledge (please note, not exactly blessing) on condition that I stay as active as pain allows me.

My right hip really troubles me, though. Last week I could do a straight leg lift; this week I can't. I was never able to do that and that has not changed. Right leg cannot take weight, left leg can. Really confounding, isn't it?

How about taking them with food - would that make it any better?

Well done there Cels, another milestone.

I had to have Rivaroxaban for 5 weeks - 35 days.

      Annie,

Our bodies are weird things, nothing is as simple as you'd expect.

My body reacted differently in my two recoveries, even though it was the same hip joint and just 10 weeks apart.

Just make sure you do keep as active as you can, and monitor your legs for any signs of DVT.

      Best wishes

I did. I think it's a blood pressure problem. Just took mine and it was 161/98. Took my usual bp tablet (which I usually take just before bed) and will measure again in a bit

That is a little high ( depends on what your 'normal' is ) - as Im sure you know the lower number shouldnt be above 90 ideally so you,ve done the right thing taking you BP med early tonight - could easily be causing the headaches- hopefully it will be OK later , make sure you see your GP if this symptom continues though xx

Phoning physician first thing in the morning. Have had bp issues for yonks, but it was pretty much under control until the last few days. If, by bed time, it has not reduced substantially, I'll take another 1/2

      Hi Annie,

I am on BP meds also and was told that the medication might have an effect on hem - meaning that there are no doing what they are supposed to do - I had spikes as well as dips - I am curious what your physian will tell you -

Keep yourself hydrated and take deep breaths, sweetheart -

not much of an advice but it's all I got

He said to sit it out until Monday. If no improvement by then he'll adjust my meds. I feel a bit like I've been told to take an asprin and call me in the morning 😅
