Hello, Wednesday I have to get a EGD done due to nasua every morning. It's my first time I am nervous and I can't stop thinking of the procedure. I pray that everything goes well and I feel better afterwards. If any one of you out here has gotten this done before please inform me on what I need to know and help me feel better before this happen. Please be respectful and have consideration of how I feel to make me feel 10x better. Love too all!!

I have not had this done, only because I have EXTREME anxiety, so I wish you the best of luck. I deal with a lot of digestive issues as well, but I am trying to do everything as natural as possible before I take this next step. I opted for the barium test first (which I have not done yet) I know it can't see the lining, but it gives a good look at the upper digestive tract to see if there is any abnormalities, like a hernia, or ulcer.....also it can see how the espohogus is.......however if there was something seen they would refer for an endoscopy anyways, but for me this would be my first test should I choose to do this. I am not a fan of the thought of drinking barium either as I hear is tastes horrid, and I get queasy anytime I am nervous...so yeah. You will be fine, I think the waiting is the worst than the actual doing......anything I have read on endoscopy is they are quick and easy under sedation. Keep us posted.

You wouldn't be normal if you didn't feel apprehensive at undergoing a new ( to you ) procedure.
Practise what I've seen described as abdominal breathing. This means letting your abdomen rise as you take and briefly hold as deep a breath as you can. Then slowly, taking 5 seconds if possible, breathe out through your mouth. Repeat this several times and repeat on several occasions. I have found this very calming.
I was very fortunate and was given an illustrated leaflet explaining the procedure. I found this reassuring and opted to just have the throat spray but that was at least partly because anaesthetics panic me a bit.
If you feel it would help you can google upper endoscopy illustrations.
Remember it's a tiny camera at the end of a very thin flexible tube. When it's part way in you will be told to swallow and it felt to me the same as swallowing a piece of dry bread.
I had my endoscopy for the same reason as you and I was allowed to turn over and watch on the screen. They laughed when I asked in alarm what the black lump was. It wasn't a lump, it was the entrance to the duodenum.
I had to remove my dentures and a gum shield was put in. Also air is gently pumped in before the procedure to ensure getting a full, clear picture, I suppose. This will leave you feeling a bit bloated afterwards but nothing to fuss about. Also, because of the throat spray, you will be told not to try to eat or drink for a while afterwards until the throat muscles return to normal. A couple of hours, I think.
Hope that helps a bit and good luck.

Just get the sedation and you won't know or feel anything till you're in recovery. Never even knew anything had happened!

I'm in awe of all of you who are so relaxed about sedation and anaesthetics. We certainly are not all the same!
I had a wonderful hip replacement but I know if I have to have the other one done I'll be in a panic about not knowing what's going on.
Eldest child control freak syndrome, maybe.?

I guess we are all different. I know there is absolutely no way that the consultant would have got that endoscopy down my throat without sedation 😂

Betty, I totally get where you are coming from. I do not like the thought of being sedated or under general anesthesia either....I too like to be in control....in saying that I know I am very panicky with anything going in my mouth. At the dentist I can handle a cleaning, but a filling or extraction I leave finger imprints in the dental chair...so I could not imagine how I would handle I tube being pushed down my throat........I am really praying that I don't have to have this done, because my anxiety would get the better of me. It was comforting to read how yours went though, you seemed very clam through it all. I think it all depends on what people can tolerate.
