Really bad IBS flare up, nothing's working

Posted , 4 users are following.

hi all, looking for some advice.

my IBS has been fairly settled for a long time now. the occasional bout of constipation or diarrhoea but nothing that has caused me too much trouble.

however over the last year, whenever I get an ibs-D flare up I feel exhausted for a good day or more after. like really wiped out.

things have been bad over the last month and terrible over the last few days. anything I eat results in severe pain and a dash to the toilet 30min later. I can't keep anything in at all. I feel exhausted. I've barely moved from the sofa the last 2 days and had to call in sick to work today. I have no idea how to stop this.

hi leeniepie, contact 111, you need support. you can't cope much longer like this and if you can't keep anything down then you are an urgent case i'd say. can you keep fluid down? imodium may help the persistent runs? good luck, that sounds like no fun at all!

i dont know where you live and what version of lockdown or not you are living under. i have had terrible trouble with my ibs, because of the stress of Coronovirus and because i cant access my usual diet, due to self isolating with my mother whos elderly

i am taking Buscopan, which is antispasmotic. also trying to calm myself down, relaxation, art, virtual online walks and art, museum, performances. im taking paracetamol for pain, as it supposedly doesnt affect your stomach like ibruprofen. Eating really slowly. Trying an adapted fodmap to my particular diet. Very plain food no seasonings. Gentle warmth from heat pack for short periods of time ( otherwise make any trapped wind worse). But I expect you know all this. Have you tried getting a medical opinion by phone? Also immodium, anti diarrhoea, but for shortest time possible, to not get rebound constipation. I havent had this bad an attack in years. usually i go back to basics on my diet and within a day or so, as long as im very strict on diet and medication im coping ok. im not in as bad a state as you, although mines been going on for 12 days now. i hope things ease up a bit for you soon.

First of all, sorry to hear you're suffering, it's absolutely awful!! Have you tried any diet changes at all? My IBS got so bad with constant flare-ups so I tried low FOD-MAP diet, as well as no dairy, gluten or caffeine (not saying to try as extreme as that, but generally most IBS sufferers get on okay with low FOD-MAP). Also, seeing if there is any triggers, like stress, and trying to eliminate them can be helpful - meditation, distraction, or doctors can help with that as well. Anti spasmodics I find help the cramps of suddenly needing to go as well. Good luck, and I hope you start to get some relief soon!
