Hi evryone,
I'm new to this site and just wanted to ask you a couple of questions if that's okay?
I had post viral fatigue syndrome (well that's what the doctor said it was) when I was 14 (22 yrs ago). I go through phases where I am productive and have some energy but then afterwards am completely zomked for a couple of days. My memory is shot sometimes I find it hard to remember what I did the day before. I have severe headaches, hardly any concentration and, at times, my legs ache quite badly to the extent that it is sometimes painful to go upstairs. I have been to the doctors recently who asked if I had any holiday planned (when I replied \"only if you're going to pay for it he laughed) to which I replied no he said that I was to stay away from all types of stress and to spend the summer holidays \"chillin\". I have had enough of the blood samples and prodding and poking about just to be told that I have a non specific fatigue syndrome and that there is nothing they can really do. To compound the situation I now have been diagnosed with work related stress and depression (been signed off for 8 weeks). Does anybody know if the two are possibly linked. All advice comments truly appreciated
Thanks v much

A very warm welcome to our friendly forum and do feel free to ask any questions you wish to ..... we will do our best to answer them.
Post viral fatigue unfortunately very often leads to full blown CFS/ME .... the symptoms and severity vary tremendously with each individual.
Obviously we are not experts, but I would put my money on the fact that you have had ongoing CFS/ME to a mildish degree since your first illness - and when stressed your symptoms have been worse .... which is par for the course with ME unfortunately
Your GP sounds pretty understanding .... and certainly a couple of months of complete rest free from stress will do you the world of good. Did he suggest any form of anti-depressant? Quite a few of us take them both for pain control, sleep problems and depression associated with ME.
It may be worth asking if you can be referred to an ME clinic if there is one in your area ..... it would be interesting to see how your GP would react to this suggestion.
Have a read through some of our previous postings .... you will pick up many things that you can identify with I am sure. And you will hopefully get an idea of how we cope with this illness.
Do stay with this forum ...... we have all found it so tremendously
helpful and a lifeline at times .... it can be such an isolating illness.
There are many good books on the subject ..... one that I always have on hand is ME - A Practical Guide by Dr Anne MacIntyre - who also suffers from the illness. There is also one by Dr Charles Shepherd (again a fellow sufferer) that the others in the forum have found of great help.
Do keep in touch ...... as you have probably already seen, we also have a lot of fun on here, which helps us all so much to cope with this wretched illness. Our sense of humour is about the only things that ME has allowed us to keep intact

when i first became ill my doctor also told me it could just be a virus and to take a few weeks resting. i think this is so sensible as its generally accepted that one of the reasons some people get so bad with CFS/ME is that they soldier on and make themselves much iller :hangover:
also, if you have always had 'mild' CFS since the first time, if this is a relapse a good break could be just the trick to get you back on track.
it does sound like your doc is sympathetic to this, so if the worst comes to the worst and it is full blown CFS hopefully they will be able to help you propery.
hope that help
