Really freaked out about strange gynae referral

Hi,

My wife was seen by a GP nurse in March at well woman clinic. Has smear & full bloods. She's been menopausal for a year.

Nurse said "you've got a polyp. It'll need looked at but nothing to get worried about".

Heard nothing apart from smear that was HPV neg.

Wife chased end of Apr & told bloods fine & that they'd check about a referral.

1 week back got a referral letter saying we're looking at it, contact us at end of June if nothing heard.

Yesterday... Get a letter saying Urgent Referral appt this Thu to exclude cancer!

So we're confused & beside ourselves with worry. She's had symptoms but they're all those you'd see with menopause or polyp.

Any ideas what might have gone on here. Long way from a nurse saying no worry to a super urgent referral...!

Your wife is being referred because of the polyp . However please dont assume this is cancer. If found on the cervix they are usually removed as a VERY small proportion do become cancerous. Her smear is HPV neg and her bloods are fine which is all good news. The procedure is quick and the polyp will be biopsied but most of them are totally benign.
