Really missing my magnesium baths

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi everyone, I had surgery to both big toenails last week, and mustn't get them wet till after they are healed, which could take up to 8 weeks. I'm really missing my lovely baths with magnesium flakes in. Definitely having more pain, as well as feeling like the entire toe(s) has been bruised on the inside as well as the outside. 😞 I've tried magnesium supplements in the past, but they made me feel nauseous and unwell so I stopped them. Feeling fed-up! My baths are one of my few pleasures. x

Awww, so sorry for you Jeanne. Toe surgery, ...ouch! Pamper yourself girl! Get a gentle massage. Use a hot water bottle on your sore areas meanwhile. That always helps me. You will heal before you know it. Regards!

Can you not wrap your feet up in cling film or something water proof so you can get your baths x

Hi Trisha, well I did have a shower the other day, having put freezer bags over my feet and secured them with electrical tape, but ended up full of water. I wonder if cling film would work... Hmm! Thanks for that thought. Will report back later. xx

Well, the cling was a good idea in theory, but not so good in practice. Back to the drawing board. xx

Hi Trisha, went back to podiatry clinic for a dressing check on Friday, and the podiatrist I saw (I've seen a different one each time) said a doctor had told her the best thing to use to cover the dressings so you can have a bath is condoms! Once again, I will give it a try. xx

Well the condoms didn't work either. I put them over the whole of the forefoot but after a few minutes they were too tight. Then I tried putting one just over the big toe, but it was too big (the condom) and didn't cover the whole of the dressing anyway. Oh poo! x

Hope you are feeling better soon!

I have been having problems with my big toenails. I have been to the podiatrist and have had them packed with cotton wool and I now have to pack them myself! Hard with fibro!

Podiatrist says this is what they do before the operation you have just had and sometimes you can avoid the op doing this...so fingers crossed.

I've never heard of a magnisium bath..sounds like it's really helping you. Could you give me a bit more info on magnesium baths?. I am in an awful flare right now and have been for a few weks now so any help would be apprieciated!

Hi Amanda, I think my toenails had ingrown too much. The podiatrist said they were nasty nails after she'd removed the side bits. I can imagine how hard it must be for you to pack them yourself; doing daily dressings is bad enough. When I have a bath, I put in some magnesium flakes which I buy on Amazon. You can buy them in varying amounts and at varying prices, and I would suggest that you try a small amount to start with until you know if it helps you. xx

OK thanks I will look into them.

It is so hard to pack them I have to pack them right around the full nail. I am thinking of telling them I am struggling , my back is in agony afterwards and the fatigue is intense, hopefully they will do them for me. What I dont want is for them to say oh well we will give you an op instead!!!

The podiatrist says my problem is my nails are curved.

Hope you are feeling better soon and enjoy your baths again!!

Really? I was relieved when they told me they would operate. The right one had been so painful I could hardly bear to cut it. That pain was gone immediately after having it done. Mine were curved too. Apart from not being able to have my baths, I would recommend it! Take care. x

Mine havent been painful long enough to get to that stage yet..lol I stupidly googled it and it looks awful!. The needles in the toe sounds a bit horrific as well..lol.. I might pack them forever lol. Were you awake when they did it?.

I think the fear is the pain and knowing fibro make everything more painful .

Hope you are feeling better today..another day closer to your baths!!

It wasn't that bad! The worst part is the local injections but then I didn't feel anything till they wore off a few hours later. Even then the pain was really only that day and night. I just took cocodamol and it was ok. The podiatrist and her assistant were lovely, and chatted all the way through the procedure. With me I mean, not ignoring me and chatting to each other! Going for my dressing check in half an hour, so will see how I'm doing. I had an OT assessment this morning and they're going to provide me with a bath cushion to make it easier for me to get out of the bath. I can't wait! x

      Hope everything went OK today.

Thanks for the info on what the op involves, it helps just incase I need it!.

Was the OT assesment just for your foot or for fibro?. I only have a bath and could really do with a shower for the days when I really struggle to get in and out of it. How will the cushion help?

Hi Amanda, the OT assessment was for fibro. She was brilliant; after asking me a few questions, she went round the house with me, and suggested a handrail up the staircase which they will put in, raisers for my sofa, which they will provide, and the bath cushion, which is amazing. Google mangar bath cushion. This will be provided for me too.  I did a self-referral to adult social care online to get this. The service is provided by the local council. Have a look. xx

Amanda, I googled toenail surgery; I'm not surprised you were put off. But it looks far worse than it is from the patient's point of view. Honestly. xx

See what I mean. It looks horrendous. Thanks for all your help. I will look into the OT. Hope you are feeling better today!
