Really stiff and sore finger joints...

Just wondered if anyone could help? About three months ago my middle finger's second joint on my left hand became really sore and very stiff (especially in the morning). I had to use Voltarol to take the discomfort away and noticed that it was swollen and very sore to touch (but not full of fluid). Then it settled after a few weeks and I hoped it was just a random thing.

Then about three weeks ago a couple of finger joints on my right hand have started to do the same thing and I am waking at night with pain and a lot of stiffness. In the morning it is as if they are 'stuck' in the same position and after a little while they come back to life (although remain sore throughout the day).

Do you think it could be the start of a kind of Arthritis? Not sure if I should go to my doctor or just buy some joint vitamins or if anyone can help shed light? I eat really well and look after myself, take exercise and starflower and fish oil supplements.

Many thanks

Some people have mentioned to watch what foods I eat.....I have never in my life had food allergies. I've always tolerated all types of foods. Why at 57  could I possibly have dairy, gluten or any other intolerance to any of the mentioned items?

Well, I'm joining the 'club'. My middle finger, left hand, by the time I wake up in the morning is curled up and hurts like crazy! I have to unbend it and that hurts! I'm 66. No one in my family had arthritis so this is new for me. Getting old is hell. Good luck to all of you in finding relief. If I find a solution, I'll let you all know.

    Hi all,

im new to site but I've read all historic comments. I started with chronic neck pain related to repetitive strain injury over 13yrs ago (was a podiatrist) . I eventually had osteo arthritis diagnosed in several discs but pain has continued for years and caused two frozen shoulder ops.

The last year I have experienced increasing arm and neck pain which has spread to the hands. I developed numbness in fingers overnight when lying on either shoulder, I've had cortisone injections for trigger thumb and now it's on the opposite fore finger. I have chronic pain and stiffness in both hands - worse overnight. I finally was sent back to a rheumatology consultant recently who has diagnosed Fibromyalgia. This was due to other symptoms which have developed over the last year- disturbed sleep and waking in pain, feeling tearful with the pain when bed, dry eyes, tenderness on side of arms and legs and just the slightest knock on something causes lots of pain, headaches and fuzzy head, and the general pain experienced all over my body (except my elbows!!) I'm now on Pregablin and increasing gradually but it's not yet having full effect so still taking Tramadol once daily when pain is great.

I have wondered if there also may be some food intolerance and may get this checked.

The spread of pain and stiffness to my hands is the last of the symptoms I have developed but this has really increased in its severity in just 6 months.

I think it's worth thinking about other symptoms you may have which may surprisingly be linked to the overall cause ... My Fibromyalgia may have developed from suffering long term neck pain and osteo arthritis causing sensitivity in the nerves and muscles apparently but there are other causes.

Theres no cure but I'm really hoping I may find other ways of managing pain alternative to a lifetime on drugs?!

I do take turmeric and have been told magnesium may help?

I have the exact same condition's in both my hands, and now starting in my thumb joint , and it is starting to lock! I have had surgery on my middle finger on my right hand, and the finger is no better! I have had prostate cancer, the robotic surgery, and the follow up radiation treatment! My neck also hurts, and I am wondering if it is the cause of my hands hurts so much!I am 63 yo and living in Thailand! I have good insurance, and the Dr.s here are very good, and have taken care of the cancer, but this hand thing has really thrown me for a loop! The answer about the wheat, is possible, but I have always eaten wheat, and it never did this before! I am at a loss, have tried the wax thing, and does see to help, but not fix anything! The pain in my thumb joint is excruating and I would like some releif! I do not think surgery is the answer!

I too have many of the same symptoms listed on this thread. It first started with the big toe and then resolved itself after 2 months. Then the left hand palm knuckle on the middle finger was tender and sore and the middle finger began locking. It spread to the ringer finger and ultimately the pinkie of the left hand. It was intially only painful and swollen at night and then began to effect me during the day too. It then spread to the right hand the same way. I began taking Anastrozole (Arimidex generic) 1mg tabs in May for breast cancer, the symptoms began a few weeks afterwards. Musculoskeletal side effects are very common with this medication and I have ceased taking it 2 weeks ago and made an appointment with my onocologist to discuss. Wondering if anyone else is taking this medication who is experiencing these symptoms?

I have the same symptoms on my right hand. I was wondering if it was arthritis as i read that rheumatoid arthritis starts like this. Sometimes my middle finger is sore for up to three days, like it's been burned or had a paper cut. Really painful, no fluid.

    Hi Newbod

I'm experiencing the same symptoms you're having.  I've had cortisone shots in both hands (temporary fix) eventually the stiffness comes back.  Doctor said sooner or later I would have to have surgery because the tunnels in my hands has inflammation, but the problem I'm realizing is coming from the nerves in my back, up to my neck and down my arm.  I was reading the reply of Gerry the Neck and it seems to me I have the same symtom.  When I mentioned it to the specialist he wasn't certain about the nerve travelling from my back to my hands which is what I feel, which is also the reason I don't want to do surgery.
