reassurance required

I am 53 and am going through the menopause.  I have been treated for the past year for thrust.  However recently I went to my doctor for a routine smear test and was told it wasnt thrush.  She said I had lichen sclerosus, she printed off an information sheet for me and told me that there is a chance I could get cancer and it is malignant.  She has referred me to a dermatologist.  I am very worried as I had never heard of this disease before.  I am very itchy but this only occurs at night.  I have had a few cuts but these don't bother me much.  At the minute I think I need reassurance more than anything else.  Is there anyone else who felt like this.

So sorry you got this.  From what I have been told and read that getting cancer from this is rare.  Having a lot of scar tissue in the area can be the cause of getting cancer. Get treatment and continue treatment, that is important.  Lots of good advise on this forum. Good luck to you

Change of vuvlar cancer goes up to only 5% with LS especially when left untreated.

When you look at the horror photos, it's the patients with great areas of open sores who get cancer. I was so happy to hear Dr. Goldstein's stats – as long as we do our treatment and get checked regularly, we're good. Plus squamous cell cancer moves very slowly, so it's not going to take anyone by surprise if she's using the mirror, staying oiled up and getting checked.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind replies.  They have been most comforting and reassuring.  I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply.  I think I would have been demented by now without this support.  Will keep you all updated.

It is the open wounds that can turn cancerous too I believe which is why it is so important to treat and continue treating frequently at first then twice a week forever.  It is  better to prevent flare ups.  So sorry you have joined our ranks.  Awful thing to have but we can make life comfortable mostly by treatment.  Moisturise frequently, every loo visit is a good time and keep the area free of urine as this really seems to cause problems.  Good luck with your dermatologist.
